Fixed headlook

When playing flight sims like FSX, I like to be able to fix my viewpoint from inside the cockpit. If I'm banking towards the runway, I'll typically lock my view out the side window to keep the runway in my sight.

In ED, while approaching stations and maneuvering around smaller stations, it's frustrating to have to engage headlook, move the camera to observe, disengage headlook, maneuver a bit and repeat. I'd like to be able to keep my headlook view fixed so that I'm free to pitch and roll.

In FSX, if you don't have a joystick with a hat switch, this is achieved simply by holding space and moving the mouse. Moving the view near the default position locks it in place with a small deadzone.

I'm not sure from your description, but are you using your joystick for headlook?

Myself, I use the mouse for headlook and the joystick for manoeuvring. Easily accomplished at the same time (except in dogfights).

I don't use a joystick, just keyboard and mouse. This is the alternative for a hat switch for people without a joystick.

Yes, with keyboard/mouse controls I can imagine it being a bit cumbersome without having a "hold down" key available.

Still, the EDtracker is apparently a very affordable and useful headtracking tool that might be a nice buy even for those flight simulators that you play. And, naturally, I'd also recommend a joystick - not need to go all HOTAS, something as simple as Thrustmaster t16000M works just fine.

I used to use a SideWinder back in the day, but now I prefer using the mouse whenever I can. Something about joysticks, especially with resistance, feels somewhat odd and makes the experience less fluid. Also I don't like to clutter up my desk with peripherals.

And I'm not that hardcore than I need some VR or head tracking system. Besides, non-visor trackers like EDtracker just seem awkward because you have to face away from the screen.

I had this mind blowing idea for a control setup for a friend that did not have a throttle but only just a stick. You hold a stick in right hand as per usual then a mouse ( lets say an MMO mouse) in the left hand with the wheel as throttle. You use the mouse for free look as usual but you invert both axis and hold the mouse backwards. If I did not have a Stick and throttle I would totally try it.

I hear you. I'd like to keep my desk clear of such things as well, but this game has corrupted me. But I do put them away to sit on top of my desktop (that is set on a wheeled stand on the floor by my desk) so that they are a bit out of the way when I'm not playing. It gives me a better view of my musket pistol replica. ;)
