Flat platform that moves when launching?

The flat platform that moves from in front of you when launching. Don't tell me I'm the only one that wonders what it's purpose is supposed to be.

It is a blast shield to protect the walkways and people behind the ship on landing. That is all I can come up with sorry.

Some rumored it might be a blast shield,
but i say it is just there to give a landing pilot orientation, where his
rear shall be to dock successfully.

"release timer" aka, gives you an idea of when your about to be released. heh. it could be a magnetic beam amplyflyer, or just a random tidbit of metal that people thought would be nice to add.

I like the blast shield idea except it moves out of the way revealing the cars on the road before engaging engaging engines.

Haha, I can literally envision that moving surface (Blast shield, whatever) shouting at your Cockpit :

I move! I make noise! I release the ships! I'm always there for you! Are you not entertained ???!

;)

Kinda like the doors in the original Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy ?

"What a pleasure it is to open for you.
I will gladly close for you now."

Its the cargo loading ramp.

It usually connects to the rings where the little trucks run (in the Coriolis at least).

And the doors to the cargo bay are at the rear of the ships (they are visible in the animation of your ship when the game is loading), which would put them right by each other when you land nose-in.

that annoying ramp is there from the start ... it's the only and most annoying animation I've ever seen ... it's there to annoy you ! ;)

It's meant to have mirrors on it, so you can check how you look before take off - however, until the character models are included in the ship and external views of your fancy paintwork are possible, the mirrors have been removed, leaving only the placeholder. (That almost sounds convincing....)
