Flat Roofs

I'm trying to build a western style building around the entrance to a coaster and I'm having a lot of difficulty with the flat roof. I wanted to make a two-story structure with a flat roof on the lover level and then build an upper level on top of it. I'm obviously doing something wrong because it seems like it's going to take me forever to make a simple roof.

I select the flat roof piece that I want and when I move it over the walls the piece wants to drop to the floor. Then I hold the shift-key to bring it up to a level at the top of my walls and it seems really difficult to line it up properly. When I finally do, and hit ctrl-d to duplicate the piece, the new piece, again, drops to the floor. Then it takes forever to line it up next to the piece of roof I just placed, and so on. So it basically seems like it's going to take me hours just to make a stupid flat roof on a building that really isn't that large. So my question is 2-fold.

1. Is there an easier way to do this than I'm doing it?
2. Once I lay down the length of roof in one grid, can I highlight 3 or 4 pieces that run the width of the building, duplicate that, and start to place it down the lenght of the buliding? I use the multi-selection tool to get the roof pieces I just placed but it won't let me ctrl-d to duplicate the multiple pieces I selected.

after a few pieces, the game usually works out what you are doing and the new pieces default to the correct location. selecting from the menu rather than ctrl-D might help. i find selecting multiple pieces and ctrl-D usually is excellent at auto line-up.

1. There is a option (when you selected the building) on the right hand lower corner where you can adjust the grid settings to smaller portions so it won't drop to ground level and you can build in smaller grids (width=max 2, height=max 0)
2. yes you can. The building identifies the objects/walls you are using and will change the grid parameters according to that. Building the castle bridging piece for example changes the height grid automatically to 0, so you can adjust with smaller increments. The (quarter) round towers adjust the grid to a smaller width (2m). If you don't have these in your building it will automatically (every time you select the building for editing) reset to the large scale.
