Flawed focus crystals - the rarest common material.

Try bounty hunting somewhere there are low value small ship pirates
Or trade 1 exquisite focus crystal for lots.

Do ship in conflict zones count as 'military' instead of 'combat'?

They count as "something else" yes - and have different spawns.

I mostly do conflict zones for conductive components/ceramics and thermic alloys, extraction sites for common stuff.

Maybe since 3.0 the repair technicians remove the flawed focus crystals or the npc pilots quickly remove them between flights. So now one can trade an exquisite focus crystal for 96 flawed.

Hmm... I've been getting these as mission rewards since I can remember. Didn't know they were that "rare". Guess I'll hold onto them. ;)

Get them from time to time when I get interdicted and I feel like blowing up a pirate. That and some other oddities...

OP, I have 250 Flawed Focus Crystals now. I'd give you some if I could drop them. You'll have more than you need in 30 minutes at Dav's Hope. However, if you've never been to Dav's Hope, getting to it the first time is a Lat Long navigation challenge.

So....these are supposed to be commonly dropped by combat vessels? Nonsense. I've been in a tonne of conflict zones and not ONE has been dropped. Any ideas? Because I haven't seen a single one.

Go to Dav's Hope (Hyades Sector DR-V c2-23 A5 at 44.818 / -31.389) with an SRV and run around in circles picking up materials. Relog each lap, the flawed focus crystals were dropping left and right for me this evening, along with chemical manipulators, ceramic composites, heat vanes, etc, etc. o7

From my experience, they were gone between 2.4 and 3.0.
But now you can get them as a mission reward as Sylveria suggested.
But I'd go for grade 4 and 5 mats now and trade in what's missing as krylite pointed out.

Just trade down a few refined ones. Excuisite are still among the most diffucult to get mats.

With the introduction of mat traders specifically hunting for low grade mats has become inefficient. Time is better spent on gathering high grade stuff and trade a few down for what low grade mats you need.

What I don't get is, for these low-grade "common" mats, why I can't make them myself by deliberately breaking some higher-grade stuff.

I walk into an Engineer's workshop with a bagful of perfectly ordinary focus crystals I found in pirate debris. Engineer says they won't do, he needs flawed ones. Weird, but OK, I can make flawed ones.

[shakes bag, slams it into the counter a few times]

There. Now they got flaws. What's that, you need some "crystal shards" now? Ok, sure. Can I borrow a hammer?

I get these as 4-5 packs from missions. By selecting this reward, you usually have to give up ~3 Million payout. Quite pricey, these crystals.

Roughly 500k a pop for G5 materials, when deducting from the reward. I'd happily pay that straight out to get ahold of them to be honest, so I'll nab them at any chance!

@OP, plenty of Flawed and Focus Crystals from Res Pirate Kills and Degraded Emissions USS, failing that Dav's Hope is a good source (wish they'd put the Naphtha Tanker etc back the way they were and include better loot in the Cargo hold for Pirates... *Le sigh*).

You kinda can, Raw Materials Trader. Though maybe not quite like that, instead it's more like you walk into the Materials Trader and they say they'll give you X amount of Flawed Focus Crystals for each of your normal Focus Crystals. No breakages, wasted fragments, or bleeding fingers required. :D

Otherwise I'd get my Flawed Focus Crystals, hold them on a very long stick near my thrusters, pop them under the wheel of my SRV and buff them until I can fob them off as "Refined". :p
