It seems real immersion breaking (and frankly laughable) that you have to pay upkeep to support this "virtual crew", but they can't be bothered to fuel your ship. You're a multi billionaire that has the wealth to purchased a gigantic moving station, but you can't pay for mining facilities aboard your own ship? This is a massive ship with a large crew, how is there not a way to employ crew designated to refueling the carrier?!?!?
I thought the first part of FDev's design process when thinking of a new feature was to think about how it would really work. Is this what they envisioned? You're on your carrier and fuel is low. You inform your captain that you will be leaving to search for tritium deposits and begin mining fuel. Your captain stays seated in her chair and just says "Ok, see you in a few days. This massive crew and I will just be here waiting." What a laughable and ridiculous scenario. In reality, I would imagine the captain would interject with something like: "Sir, are you sure you wouldn't rather I dispatch a mining crew? It would be far more efficient that you going alone." Even more believable is that your captain advised you to equip mining facilities and hire a mining crew before embarking on a deep space exploration journey.
So, how can this work in game without screwing up the economy? Here's how. You should have the ability to equip a tritium mining facility on your carrier with a manager that oversees a crew for fuel replenishment services. Hold on, before you fire back that it will ruin the economy, let's also say the tritium mined by this example facility onboard your carrier can only be used to move your ship and cannot be sold or transferred. Also, if you equip a tritium mining facility, you trade in your marketplace and any other economy driven services to ensure that a carrier built for exploration is just that.
Let's be real. It's ridiculous to think that if you choose not to purchase tritium from some market, then the job of mining to refuel a carrier is the direct physical responsibility of the carrier owner. I get that you can try and get real commanders involved to help fill up your tank, but this shouldn't be your only other viable means to skip countless hours of searching for and mining tritium. You're really expected to go out in your T-9 to mine fuel while the rest of the waste of money, useless virtual crew just hangs out on your ship for days losing respect for your authority and intelligence? I don't think so.
