Flexible outfitting

Changing to a system where outfitting was handled in terms of overall space instead of slots would go a long way towards making ships more customizeable. Instead of fitting a module in a slot, you would have space that could be filled in any number of different ways. Want to have a lot of small modules for a multipurpose ship that is mediocre at everything, you can do that. Want to put an oversized powerplant and distributor in your tiny ship so you can shoot lasers all day without stopping... ok, but watch out for the heat. Want to put a class 4 FSD in your eagle? Well, you won't have room for shields or anything but the smallest thrusters, but ok.

Instead of filling slots, we could be filling space inside the ship.

I think that for the newcomers ( we all were once) it's already a difficult step to learn howto setup your ship, doing like you want to do would make it impossible for a newbie.
Second, what you are explaining in fact is that you want to put a (example) 100,000hp diesel engine in a truck that can only hold 500hp. Let me tell you that it wont work, the weight of the engine, the proportion AND at last the fuel that it would take...same in our ships, that is why the dev's set boundaries to the slots and that is just what makes you wana buy another ship.
