Flight Assist off, keyboard only?

I really want to play with flight assist off, but my mouse is being uncooperative. Between messing with relative mouse and dead zones, it's just not getting to where I want it to be. I started to look into a trackball (which would likely work better than a standard mouse). But then I had a thought. FA off is basically just "toggling" thrusters and a mouse is more "hey, let's keep it moving!" I can't think of a good reason to effectively have some thrusters (y/p, likely) on mouse while others are on buttons. So, put it all on buttons, right?

I haven't thought of a good way to do this yet, but I'm leaning in the direction of some kind of WASD/IJKL configuration. Maybe WASD for horizontal plane (i.e. traditional FPS) movement and IJKL for y/p and then Q/E for roll? Has anyone ever tried something like this?

I can’t say I’ve tried it but putting yaw and pitch exclusively onto a keyboard when you’re doing FA off sounds like a questionable idea at best. Because you won’t have any particular fine control over the input unless your keyboard is fancy and can register partial presses as such. Or maybe you have a program therefor.

And I don’t believe it needs to be explained to anyone familiar with FA off flight why not having fine control over the two main ways to aim (I suppose roll as well, to an extent) is probably asking for trouble. That said, if you manage to make it work for yourself, why not.

I see what you're saying here and that thought crossed my mind. My problem is that I'm not getting fine control with the mouse. I play on a slightly uneven surface so I frequently have to stabilize the mouse.

Maybe I should look closer at a trackball then...

Try turning your mouse sensitivity waaaaaay down because using a keyboard isn't likely to give you the small smooth controlled inputs you need. A mouse, joystick, controller with10x less sensitivity than you'd normally use is a good place to start since FA off is all about the control and not the twitch.

Thanks! I did mess with that a bit and it helps.

Things are still a little twitchy and I'm trying to figure out how to determine my vector. I've (presumably) figured out that my throttle gauge is telling me how fast I'm going either "generally forward" or "generally backward". Space dust and reference objects kind of help, but still some things are happening I don't seem to understand. I was trying to manually launch from a coin slot station. I could tell I was drifting back and "left" so I applied some thrust forward and "right". However, I then just ended up drifting upward into the side of the base and then started bouncing around like a bingo ball.

I have found Moxen Wolf's videos and I'll be working on those exercises, but it would be helpful if he had also had a script in play to show his key presses.

But, I'm dead set on doing this. I just watched a YT video of someone zipping through the "city" underneath the exterior shell of a spinning station and I had no idea so much was going on under the surface. I need to see this for myself!

Keep dropping your sensitivity until it's manageable and then slowly push it back up. I'd suggest taking a shield boosted vulture with slow drives out to an asteroid belt or ring and just flying around the rocks. It's space so it's less which way you're going and what do you need to do to put yourself where you want to be.

Try setting a key for Controls > Mouse Controls > Disabled Relative Mouse (set as toggle)
and toggle it when you fly with FA off - this allows for very fine-tuned adjustments (while RM On while FA is on is way more convenient)
- Pardon me if you already tried that and meant that with messing with relative mouse
