Flight Assist OFF or ON - How do you Fly?

Flight Assist ON or OFF or Neither

Oi!

While discussing with myself whether I should use gimballed weapons on my Eagle to adjust it for FAoff fighting, curiosity got the better of me. So:

Are you guys flying with Flight Assist activated or deactivated? Or are you going somewhere hybrid, like flying FAoff but fighting or landing FAon?

I myself try to keep it FAoff only, as it really gives the game the spacey feeling I search for. It does make fight dangerous-ranked enemies quite hard, so I'm still struggling with that. Could also be the fact that my biggest ship is the Eagle, but somehow the game really doesn't feel well designed for FAoff. The landing points on many stations are a bane, with many unnecessary obstacles and the most ridiculous landing vectors. I mean, that ramp has no obvious function other than being in the way, and having you come from and start towards the direction of the building somehow isn't right at all. Not even beginning to complain about the lousy indicators of movement. Space dust, pff.

And going even further, do some of you organise in FAoff-only groups? It certainly could add nice aspects to the PvP, I imagine.

I await your opinions!

I use both. FA off mainly just for turning faster when in combat. But I also sometimes just like to sit in place and spin while waiting to dock. That's right; I like to sit and spin. Wanna fight about? :p

FA On about 95% of the time, but I do use it for certain landings and combat manuvers that are otherwise difficult to pull off with it on.

Still, FA On is vastly less work to aim fixed weapons with, and if you have good thruster control, there are only a hand full of situations where FA Off is better.

Most of the time with FA-on - but do turn it off for some combat manoeuvres and I do like to turn it off when approaching stations and outposts - real slow and slide past them.. great fun.

Wait, this game allows you not to spin? I should recheck my calibration....

Or increase the dead zone. Not sure how it is with a joystick, but the default mouse dead zone was so small, I was always turning one way or another. I just put it up to about 75% or so and now I can actually have a dead zone.

I fly with a HOTAS and pedals, don't see an option for 'Switch when needed' When I leave the station, I tell Voice attack to retract the gear, the computer also switches FA OFF & boost's while I align with the star. When I ask it to engage warp it enables FA and charges the drive.

Same with landing, drop out of warp, FA switches off, gear down, and re-enables just before I land. In combat I'm switching it ON and OFF constantly, and on on outposts I tend to land/take off purely with FA OFF (occasionally engaging to stabilize)

If you time when you toggle FA in turns, you can power slide nicely into any position once you have a feel for the ships inertia, great fun in the big heavy ships.

I didn't answer pool. There isn't my answer. I fly mostly with turned it on, but I turn it off in combat when in need of quick turn.

Useless discussion. Like FA ON is a bad thing. Look at what is available right now, autopilot in airplanes, autoparking, direct steering assist, ABS , EPS in cars etc.... and everybody uses it. Hell, even F1 cars have more automated stuff than you can imagine.

I usually fly with it on, but in dog fights and approaching docking ports, sometimes I'll switch it on if it gains me an advantage

It's funny because we don't have autopilot. But seriously, I just wanted to see whether there are other people who see it as some sort of hard mode. I draw way too much fun from it to see it as just another system that can be optimised in use. What it obviously can be, given what I read.

Only useless thing is your contribution to the discussion. Nobody is saying FA on is a bad thing. Both modes have there merits, and can be very effective when switched appropriately. These are FBW machines, to be able to quickly change the flight control laws is a great aspect of the game. FA ON is basically an autopilot, like control wheel steering on older airliners

I agree i love that physics aply to this when you are chased boost turn of FA idle your throtle turn 180 and still be flying in the same direction.

or swing around space stations on momento .
