Proposal Discussion Flight Assist Off

Hey Commanders

Did a quick forum search, but nothing seemed to answer this question.

Trying my hand at flight assist off, and I can't seem to control engine burst. It's either max or nothing. Watching Isinona (awesome...) it seems that he is able to set engines to steady burns. What am I missing?

See it and weep:

(Sure don't want to get in his way unless I'm flying an Anaconda, in which case I'll just try to ram him!!! :) Notice the word try...)

Any tips on flying FA-Off will be greatly appreciated.

Fly safe Commanders!

Edit: I'm using an Xbox 360 wireless controller.

FA OFF flying require lots of skill and practice. Engine boost is used to stabilize the ship, having all 4 pips in engines allows boosting often. However, in bounty hunting video the enemy would be destroyed much faster in FA ON.

Also you can perform similar manoeuvres with FA ON as with FA OFF if you learn to use vertical and lateral thrusters.

I hope they make it toggleable because it's the perfect thing for a pinky switch imho.

I also have serious trouble doing anything other than strafing or orbiting with it, but it helps doing 180 degree turns.

AFAIK it is togglable.

At least I'm sure I've saw the option to make it so while watching an alpha tester's video.

Are you using the 1.1 build? Maybe they added it in later. Or maybe I was dreaming.

It is togglable for sure now and I think that it was already togglable in Alpha 1.1.

It is toggleable. I'm in 1.1 and have FA-on/off on left analog thumb toggle.

My question is still though, how does he keep boost/power steady (in the blue zone)? When I use main engine in FA-off it's either full pelt or nothing. I can't seem to be able to adjust power... :(

Set the speed you want and cut-off throttle. In this case you should maintain the speed in the given direction (vector).

If you watch Isinonas video again, you will notice that he has his main engine at different levels of "steady" power output. How does he do that? I only seem to have 2 options, max or nothing...

Can you set main engines to different "steady" outputs while in FA Off?

He must have bound it to an analog axis, such as the throttle on a HOTAS setup.

I would not despair over it too much, though, I think using analog axes for thrust in FAOFF is something of an overkill - you're already fine adjusting a velocity when using thrust, if you want you can add an analog component to it but you just get to fine control the rate of change. I don't see the point.

Ah. So that's probably not an option for me on my Xbox 360 controller... :(

The point, for me, would be to be able to fly like that (sliding through space, and not on rails like the E: Dangerous mechanic). I'm a big fan of the Elite 2: Frontier flight mechanics.
<...really would like to be able to fly like in Elite 2: Frontier in E: Dangerous...:(>

My point is, you can.

You don't need an analog axis to do any of that, just bind the FA toggle to one of the buttons (or use the setting in the side panel if you don't mind FA staying off)

:S

I've done this. I have FA toggle on left analog thumb. But I still can't "control" main engine output. It's either max or nothing.

If you use the increase and decrease speed buttons in FAOFF they'll act like apply 100% thrust in either direction. Only if you use an analogue input for speed will it work in a way that'll set the thrust to some percentage of max. We've made a change locally so that the speed setting buttons will also set the same amount of thrust in FAOFF as they didn't do anything before when in that mode.

Max or nothing is good enough. If you want only small acceleration, use short bursts. (I use keyboard for this myself)

No it isn't. Sorry. If you try flying FA-Off, you will find that being able to manage main engine thrust is crucial. I only have on/off option. If you watch the videos again you will see that main engine thrust is managed. I want to know how to do that while flying FA-Off.

I know how to fly FAOFF and I've never felt like I needed analog axes for thrust. If anything I find them a hindrance as the ability to switch between 0% and 100% quickly is what is truly crucial to me.

Mike! Thank you. Now this makes sense. I thought I was going mad!... :)

So if I assign main thrust to one of the analog thumb sticks, I would be able to gain this control?!... Oboy oboy.... Can't wait for your reply... ;)

Yeah, if you assign it to the right stick Y axis with full range enabled the default position of the stick will equate to 0% throttle. Then pushing it up or down will give you direct control over the thrust applied.
