Flight Sim Fans

If you got yourself a shiny new joystick, HOTAS, etc., etc. just for E:D (maybe for that other sci-fi, spacey, shoot-em-up game still in development that shouldn't be mentioned, too) GOG.com has old flight sims on sale as a package for dirt cheap.

No, I'm not in any way associated with nor do I benefit from gog.com sales. I have shied away from flight sims for years because I wasn't going to invest in a joystick/throttle. Now that I have my X52-Pro I figured I'd try to leverage it. That said, I have no idea if those old flight sims will support the X-52 Pro. LOL

Just thought I'd mention it!

See you in the void!

Some of the really old flight sims didn't support HOTAS because they didn't exist, but who wants to go back that far. Most of the so called sims I've seen and purchased of late were nothing but jokes. Mainly due to the fact that they were console ports. There is nothing more ridiculous for a developer to do than stick a cutscene of you taking off right after you pull up your landing gear, then again when you reach you target.......... Ubisoft.....................horrible.... just horrible.... game went right in the trash.... Sim or cutscene game....consoles ruined another genre of PC games for a while.... until sims like DCS arrived... Thank god they'll never exist on a console.

Spent many hours playing Microprose, Janes, and even some Novalogic.

I bought IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover on a Steam sale a while back and couldn't play it much because of lack of a proper joystick. I'll have to give it a go again when I get my X52pro.

I dont know if they support X-52 Pro but most of them that run on XP/7 support the Logitech extreme 3Dpro but not all functions as well

a shame that ED does not support the throttle from ma Logitech but i hoe till release they do

If you do, the guys at ATAG have produced a few patches that have corrected a lot of the sim's problems that were never addressed by the developers. Doesn't make it the game it could have been, but it at least makes it playable.

Heh, that website is good for bringing back some nostalgia. I remember playing all those games with this simple 2-button joystick.

I don't think I could go back and play them again though. :p

Keep an eye out for a resurgence of FSX - Dovetail are putting FSX out on Steam on the 18th of Dec.

I actually just reinstalled it the other night for the first time in a long while. Not as bad as I remembered it, but I'll be modding it as soon as I've got free time. Haven't played any flight sim since I got elite. Kept wondering why the directional thrusters weren't working on my hurricane.

Already played Rebel Assault again with the CH-Combatstick I bought for Elite.
It was my first game, and damn is it hard. I remember beating it on hard back when I was young, but know I even struggle on easy...

For any Commanders here who bought HOTAS rigs or even just a joystick for ED, I'd recommend trying Rise of Flight. It's a WW1 biplane air combat sim, very fun to fly in either singleplayer missions, the limited campaign mode, or full multiplayer.

It's like the technological opposite of ED, flying fragile canvas and wood kites at slow speeds, with intense combat action against similar planes. It supports HOTAS, rudder pedals, and TrackIR (all highly recommended for this game). The demo is free, and then you can decide whether to purchase additional planes or packs of planes from the store. Here's the demo page:

The same company has released a new one called IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad with WW2 planes. I think it's probably more of a mixed bag, due to some poor design decisions, but check it out if you like this period. Personally, I like Rise of Flight's fragile biplanes better as a break from space games.

DK2 support?

DK2 support?

Not as far as I know, since RoF is an older game and the developers have moved on to Battle of Stalingrad in WW2, which I think does have Rift support. That's probably the one to check out for historical air combat, if you're a DK2 user.

The devs have said they're looking into getting Rift support into the Rise of Flight at some point, but I don't know what the progress of that is. There might be some user hacks for it. Maybe someone else here is more familiar with that end of things. I'm just using TrackIR for now, waiting on the consumer VR version.

Ha ha sorry outside of elite I will stick to FSX and the good old 737 and other such aircraft the only excitement will be when I bounce onto the runway at EGFF a bit to quickly and the Fs passengers have a sharp intake of breath.

Funny when you think though it was the original Elite that sparked the intrest in flying in the first place.

Bah, flying heavy iron in FSX is boring! Fly like us real virtual pilots fly, in the bush!

I almost fly exclusively in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest areas in FSX, with small bush planes capable of landing in challenging areas and bad weather. I love it!
