Flight technique question

I was reading an entertaining post about a gentleman who got pirated when approaching a station and he stated that when he got fired on he disengaged FA and headed straight for the station.

I disengage FA to aid in dogfights all the time to turn on a target without changing my vector, so I know how to use it to some degree, I thought.

What is the usefulness of turning it off in a straight run? Can you increase your top speed by disengaging and boosting?

Thanks, pardon me if its a noob question.

Yes, currently turning fa off allows your ship to boost once or twice and stay at top speed. The advantage being you don't have to keep boosting to stay at top speed like you dovwith fa on.

In a straight line you can hit boost then FA OFF and you'll stay at boost speed until such time as you touch the throttles , apply thrusters or switch back to FA ON.

This can be quite useful if you're travelling a long distance but don't want to use the frame shift drive. You could also power down your drives and switch to silent running to travel while being hard to detect.

Sequence is..
Point at destination
FA off
Boost
Throttle off
Power to shields
Drop heatsink
Silent running (optional)

Get cold and you're hard to target.
