So... I am not an idiot but I cannot get out of this bloody Sidewinder and into the Hangar. I have selected Go To Hangar a million times and looked every where else. Please tell me this is a known issue?

I encountered the same problem. Not a good way to introduce new players to the game!
Is it possible to progress/continue without getting the "license" that is the reward for ending this tutorial?
(BTW: I added the Return key to act as a backup SPACEBAR, but the result was the same)

Just select skip tutorial (or some such words) in the menu.
I did. But without a licens, which you get from the tutorial, I am unable to progress.
Every time I start the game, I start in the lobby of a space station (First person mode) and told to go to ."compagny name! and get my licens.
So basicly I am unable to play the game
I do clear saves quite often and I know for a fact that if I skip the training I go to the commander name and ship selection - then into ship no bother. Sounds like you are starting in Odyssey if you start in a lobby? Try just selecting Horizons in the launcher and see if that gets you sorted. Look here to see what I do:
