Flying manoeuvres

Apologies if this is posted anywhere else but i couldn't find it.
So I figure its time to stop dogfighting like a bull in a china shop and actually learn how to fly, On the rare occasions I have met other players out in the universe, one or two fancy moves have definitely caught my eye. It would be really cool if someone produced a pilots guide to dogfighting, starting with simple techniques and moving on to more intricate and complex attack strategies. Similarly I would find it helpful to actually learn how to evade somebody whilst under fire.
Trial and error is all well and good, but if you have no real experience, then its only going to get you so far.
Any hints and tips would be gratefully received and if such examples already exist, then a point in the right direction would suffice :)

So come all of you pro flyers, don't keep it to yourself, teach me how to circle strafe, evade and generally kick some ass- cos im getting creamed out there!
:p

I would give you some good advice, but for the moment I do not have the alpha and I am totally incompetent to pilot a spaceship

:p

+1 to that.

I have watched a few alpha vids and its quite apparent when you watch a player who has natural skill when compared to another player who has no skill. You may have a player with 20 hours alpha game time come across a player with 1 hour game time, and that 20hr guy could get blown away easily.

Now the following may, or may not apply to you SlackR, but its a shame to let it go to waste, so here goes ...

At times, I feel a bit sad watching these really devoted players of Elite failing over and over again. I picture a future where 15 year olds are giggling away as they dogfight slow minded, hesitant Elite veterans with failing eyesight and reflexes (like me).

Now I am not saying every Elite vet has the twitch based response time of a blind sloth, but I think it would be fair to say our better days are behind us.

I think you can't actually 'teach' stuff like this SlackR. Like you said, you may improve with practice and experience, but if you are still finding yourself mysteriously exploding, it may more of a core problem that FD may be able to help with.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a handicap system setup in ED. Frontier should recognise that many older players will find it difficult to compete in such an open aged environment. You don't see many 40+ aged people dominating many twitch based activities or sport, so what about levelling up the playing field.

I propose that when two players enter combat, their respective ages should be taken into consideration.

- The cockpit view of the younger player is blurred with an intensity matching the difference in age.

- The latency of the younger player is increased to a degree which matches the the difference in age.

- The audio of the younger player is decreased, muffled, and occasionally punctuated by flatulence, matching the difference in age.

- If combat lasts more than 15 minutes, there needs to be a 30 minute temporary truce called.

Concessions such as these are important in an equal opportunity universe, and will go far in making the game more enjoyable for the many chronologically challenged Elite fans such as myself.

You forgot toilet breaks every 5 mins for the really old farts! ;)

I don't suppose any of the tactics I would use in flight sim s will work here because

A) both ships are equally matched

B) there is no air so you can't use it to your advantage.

perhaps attacking with the star behind you could still work.

I think once new ships are added we will see some good tactics.

Lol totally for that :D
But you could actually have a chess rating based on previous fights and when you pick up a PVP mission you get matched with an equally unfit person :p

The force is strong with you!

Switching engines on and off to rotate your ship for changing the angle of attack looks really cool, and, probably, very helpful in combat. Provided i interpreted your actions correctly.

Hey that's a great video!

Also shows that mouse+keyboard can be just as effective as other devices.

Are you going FA OFF for some manoeuvres?

Flight assist on or off...

I'm not in the alpha (waiting for beta... :(), but having flown Frontier: Elite 2, the most obvious tip would be to fly with flight assist off during combat, and steering with thrusters only. This should (correct me if I'm wrong) enable a greater chance of keeping your bogey in your crosshair while you rotate each other, because you can move your ships heading independently from its trajectory.
Flying with flight assist on makes you fly in a more "traditional" manner, where your crosshair points (heading) the way you are traveling (trajectory).

Fly safe commander! :)

Learn to fly without flight assist right away anything else is a waste of time - flying with flight assist is like driving car that can only turn left, It leaves out half your maneuverability.

It usually takes more time and is more frustrating to learn to fly without flight assist but it's worth it.

Mouse + Keyboard works great once you get used to it.

I use FA off to turn.

I have found that in combat boosting out of a flight assist off turn is necessary otherwise you open yourself up as a very easy target.

IMO this is not really true. Pure FA Off is very difficult and leaves one at a distinct disadvantage for very tight maneuvers. FA OFF is like ice skating and I would love to see someone fly through the Impeccable (from back to front) entirely in FA Off mode.
