PvP Focused lasers

Does anyone have any experience using fixed focused burst or pulse lasers? I am mostly interested in the 120% increase to armor piercing and if it's worth using in mid to short range skirmishes. Ideally, I'd use two on an FDL, with the other two being efficient, and a huge MC. So if you have experience with Focused, I'd like to hear your two cents. Thanks.

i suggest you to learn about how armor piercing work. Its looks like better only vs big ships with more armor rating.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean.

% Hull Damage = APV / HH

(Capped at 100%, then subject to resistances)

(HH = 'Hull Hardness')

You can see every HH on the front page of Coriolis and compare to laser APV, which Coriolis will also show you.

Improving laser APV will improve hull damage in most cases, except for the larger lasers against the weaker hulls.

Big ship / medium ship doesn't make much difference in this case, as the big ships don't have much higher HH (if at all).

All that said, though, for PvP there will usually be stronger options.

@True, out of curiosity what are you flying nowadays as your goto ship?

Ha ha, NO SPOILERS, it is finished but I'm practising with it and also gathering mats and seeing whether fighting NPC's suggest any tweaks.

I think it fair to say that it will be one of a kind - not a joke, meme ship - very non-meta ... but hopefully still effective in its own way.

I appreciate your interest ofc Jason but have said the same to a few buddies

;)

I'm not asking for trade secrets, I just meant what type of ship you secretive person you! I'm guessing....Sidewinder? No! More like...a...a...hmmm...I have it! A full rail Asp Scout.

Edit: if you're going to be secretive, then so am I: under no circumstances am I going to tell you what I'm working on. No matter how badly or gleefully I want to.

In your opinion, what's more viable for a class two pulse/burst in PVP? (if not focused)

I'll be honest, if you want a couple of c2 hit scan weapons, I'd go for long range rails every time. And for PvP duelling you'll usually want at least one of feedback cascade or super penetrator in your corner ... if you're going to fight all comers, ideally both.

However, if it's definitely to be pulse/burst, then personally I'd either go for two efficient plus phasing (added to the other two efficient you mention in the OP, that would stack to a lot of hurt against a shield tank with a thin hull) or I'd go for long range (for the lack of damage fall-off). You could put scramble spectrum on one of the long range, for anti-hull harassment.

Note that whatever you go for, corrosive adds +20 to the APV of any weapon striking hull, in addition to the flat +25% damage bonus. So if you work corrosive into your build, all your lasers will get +20 APV.

LOL, the ship kinda is the secret, though ... it all fits together, the speed, the ship, the defence, the loadout ... but it's the unusual choice of ship that is the starting point. There's one ship that does what I'm after, heh. If only it did everything else as well, though ...

I look forward to learning more of your own build when all the reveals are in!

I imagine that mine won't prove to be unique, but it's a pretty new thing for me in that I haven't flown anything besides a 3x PA & 2x Rail FdL in a very looooong time. Taking a seven month break has left me pretty rusty at the stick (I was in a CZ testing my new ship last night and the first time I boost turned I went spinning like a top completely out of control), but it did wonders to clear my head and kind of open my eyes to new possibilities. I'm genuinely stoked to be playing again, trying new things and formulas.

Let me know when you're finished up and we'll have a go at it:)

Thanks, I didn't know this.

Np, the flat +20 APV opens up possibilities on some weapons such as small lasers and even (to an extent...) Cytos.

That would be great! After my own almost 6 month break, finding it challenging as you say, particularly as my new ++ spoiler ++ doesn't suit my beloved Courier medium range style, nor does it have the safety blankets of the Cutter I flew in Beta.

Exciting, though. I was talking to one of my oldest PvP buddies yesterday, Cmdr Elethiomel Zakalwe, and as you say he is stoked to be back.

For all its flaws, imo Frontier have achieved a lot for PvP with 3.0.
