Hi,
I have my thrusters engineered to grade 3 by Farseer, I have now arrived at Palin to take them from G3 to G5. The issue is that Palin is only unlocked to G1, as I have never used him before. So in do I now have to strip away all of the modifications on my drives and then restart from G1 with Palin or I can start from G3 somehow? Seem a bit silly to take 3 steps back to go 5 forward....

Buy drives from Palin, store your current drives.
Engineer the new drives, will increase your rep/level with Palin.
Seems wasteful, but you can use (and upgrade) the stored drives for other ships later.

You will need several drives, so will be better if you just buy another grade A driver FROM ANOTHER location ( Palin do NOT have grade A drivers, I think...) and start over from scratch.... Also, giving him exploring data and / or bounties also can help, tough...
Next time you need to follow the rule - until you gain level 5 reputation, ALWAYS start with the dude who give you grade 5 modification ( to avoid situations like the one you are in, now...);
The ones who only give you only up to grade 2-3-4 are great LATER only to buy from them the special effects - an engineer with only grade 1 or 2 will give you THE SAME special effect like the one with grade 5 .

I have exactly the same situation as the OP. Can you not buy cheap thrusters from the station, trade in your already pimped thrusters, then buy them back once you have unlocked grade 3? I am not sure how that works but maybe that is another solution?

If you do that exactly as you said then you will lose the engineering from your current thrusters - you need to store them, not trade them in.

But it is better still to buy thrusters that you actually want and engineer those so you don't waste any engineering materials.

Thank you. That is exactly the issue I needed clearing up before making an expensive mistake, lol.

Palin used to take exploration data for rep, but since he was exiled to Arque he no longer does I do not believe. So yes, you'll need to mod a module from scratch to get him to G3, which won't take much, and can then finish your original.
