Follow up missions.... What the hell is going on??

So, I've decided to take advantage of this Fed rank bonus and I have been doing courier runs between Ochosi and Chakpa. I'm stuck at Post Captain with 100%. I've done about six "follow up" (or "follow on") planetary scan missions and haven't ranked up yet.

NATURALLY, everything was going great and I had zero issues ranking up... until I needed to rank up to Rear Admiral.

NATURALLY, I saw a Fed navy cargo follow up mission, went to get some cargo racks, and by the time I had returned the mission had simply disappeared, so I'm stuck with nothing but follow up planetary scans missions.

What the HELL AM I MISSING? I never had this kind of trouble before.

Every single time you close and open the Mission Board again, the content of a Naval Ranking Mission (or presence or issuing Faction) is generated freshly from RNG.

So whatever you see likely won't be the same again as soon as you close the Mission Board for any reason.

Only positive byproduct : closing (none or undesired Mission type found) and opening again of Mission Board will eventually pop up with a suitable Rank Mission.
May take a little while but you should be good after a Minute or two.
Just remember to check all Federal Factions in the Mission board for presence and type of Rank Mission. Only one will ever spawn for the entire Mission board it seems.

OMG it worked! How did I never know about this trick after 1000 hours of play?

I just got a Fed Navy Courier mission.

Thank you.

I guess I had just assumed that they made refreshing the mission board impossible when they eliminated board flipping.

It only works for rank up missions. They tacked that code on later, to move the rank-up missions to the top (for visibility, I guess) and it works differently than all the rest of the missions. Fun fact!

I had an interesting one on a related(-ish) note - the 'explore the galaxy' link mission that kicks you out of the beginning area appeared 5 separate times at 5 separate stations from 5 separate providers.

As such, they're offering me 500k in total just to leave the starter zone and visit some stations! Don't know why I'm so unpopular...

Dear CMDR Tao Chang
Dont go down that road....it leads to the dark side.
You are not unpopular, school's over, time to venture into the vast blackness...
There are bigger fish out heir and some are hungry
That is why they just payed 1,6 mill to have some data transported
Come join me? I have some big hauling missions and I could use a hand..

Also, top tip, you do not have to have cargo racks on your ship to accept a cargo delivery mission.

Accept the mission then do the modification to your ship.

I had a cargo rank up mission yesterday and tried to do exactly that, but the Accept button was greyed out, presumably because I didn't have the cargo racks, as I qualified otherwise.

Also, if doing cargo runs and have a full hold, other 'well paid' cargo missions can be accepted then completed later, brilliant as the best ones invariably pop up after accepting those last 50t and only having 3t space left...

Navy rank-up missions are different. They do indeed require you to have the cargo space available before accepting.

The longer one stays in the noob zone the more offer's one gets. WHEN one accepts the first mission, the rest will no longer be available.
