...and yes - there are bugs, complaints, missing content, and balancing issues. And it's not offline/pause-able like many of us hoped.

plus there's an unforgiving learning curve for players not used to sandbox Elite / Frontier style games, and a lot of game mechanics that you don't leanr until they go wrong for you.

but despite all this

The simple fact is this is, even in it's current state, still the best computer game I've played in years.

I've put more hours into this already than any other game since probably Frontier or Civilization... I'm a grown married man and I'm sitting on the forum all day at work, waiting to get home where I can then ignore the (stacking up) list of things I should be doing to instead play this game. My missus absolutely HATES Elite Dangerous, as I've basically disappeared since it was released.

Seconded and repped. I'd pretty much given up on gaming the last couple of years, now I'm spending my entire week off playing, with the forums open on one of the three monitors I suddenly seem to have acquired. My wife is also very, very angry. Something about graphics cards and money, I forget what exactly.

Ok, stuff still needs doing. But I've been playing since may, and I used to think they didn't make games for the likes of me anymore

Yes. To all of this. Okay, I wouldn't say it's the *best* computer game I've played in timeframe, but damn, it's certainly the most captivating.
I mean, I can't play right now as I should be working (home office, too) - instead I am typing this here. And I am more interested in the GFX card
I'm going to buy than in the project which will pay for the card.

tbh, i don't think it's the best game i played in the last years, but i'd give it that, it's the most promising game since long time.

about the learning curve. i don't get it. it's pretty easy. there's some more of less hidden things, maybe nobody has yet dicovered, but the general mechanic is quite accessible.
games like EVE have a really steep learning curve, because it's so complex you can't even compare to Elite in it's current state.

having said that, the game made me get a tripple monitor setup, gfx-card, HOTAS, head tracking and i actually made a website (EliteGalaxy) just out of passion for the game.
so it can't be that bad ;)

and bugs...
no offline...
no balance....
