For The Commanders That Use Voice Attack

For those of you that were not aware of this little gem,

If you add semicolons between phrases in the 'Say Something With Text to Speech' feature, VoiceAttack will randomize which phrase to use.

so for example if you said: "Computer!" (like they do on startrek), the response could be "Yes Commander" / "Awaiting Instructions" / "What now?" / "Are you still here?" / "I told you my name is Bob" / "Hello this is your ships computer, I am sorry I cannot come to the dashboard right now, but if you'd like to leave........ and not come back.... I would appreciate it"

The possibility's are endless.... and as it's random, you never know what response you will get.

Just thought I would share that with you.

Also if you want the time read out to you, add (time) to your text to speech responses.

(TIME) = 24 hour clock
(time) = 12 hour clock

Example, if you said "Current Time", the response could be "The current time is (TIME)"

Again if you wanted to use the randomiser with the time command - You say : "Current Time", the response could be 'The current time is (TIME); It is now (time); I am not a speaking alarm clock'

If you wanted to be particularly morbid, you could set it up as an extra 'retract weapons' command.

You destroy a ship and then :

You say : "Time Of Death?"
The system responds : "Attacking ship time of death (TIME)"

The time of death command also automatically retracts your weapons while responding...

Just a thought..

Does (time) works too? Guess it doesn't matter, but in the change log it's {time}, and that's what I use.

no idea, I do not use time. I do not see a need for it personally. I just found the information last night. I have a clock above the computer screen on the wall, on the laptop under the computer screen on the table, a the smart phone and tablet on a shelf to my left.... and on my watch...

so the command seemed redundant. :)

Where is the TTS feature? I'm using VA and it's working well, but can't see the TTS feature? I'm only on the free trial right now - is that the issue? I intend to buy it, I just haven't gotten round to it yet....

instead of key press, select OTHER... then you will see it.

Please bare in mind that your text to speech voice will be the voice you currently have installed on your operating system. If you have not installed any text to speech software, or installed any third party voices, then you will hear Microsoft's own default voices (which to me sound a bit robotic)

I am using the IVONA voice pack, which provides many voices in different languages, 13 of them being english. The one in the video is SALLI (American Female English)

True, depends on what you have at hand. I don't have any of those, and it's a lot easier to just ask the time than switch to desktop or find my phone. And imagine running a VR system, then you'd definitely need something outside of the station. It's just little things like that, especially casual comment remarks, that turn VA from just a macro system into something that drags you into believing that you are in that ship with an AI on board.

is there a source of TTS voices I can purchase somewhere? I've seen some expensive options around, but looking for something like a few quid to pick and add a voice persona.

Not at all. It's like the joystick/keyboard stuff, or TrackIR/Rift/Nothing, or even playstyle...the beauty of this game is how open you are to do whatever works for you, and if you prefer one thing over another, great. Voice Attack is just another tool, some don't want to use it, some use it for basic stuff, and some, like myself, are trying to see how far we can push it, especially when he adds new functions. But it's all about enjoying the game.

I've posted this a few time before in response to other sources. The Ivona ones and others are better, but you pay for that, of course. But there's a few in that group that for free, aren't too bad at all, definitely an improvement over Anna, the MS default.

I bought mine, but I am not sure about single purchase voices.... perhaps Torrent?

(and before the forum gods jump on me - I have not supplied the actual torrent, just suggesting it as a direction )

Other then that, there is a free 30 day trial on the IVONA web site. so at least you can have a play for a month with any IVONA voice. check it out here : http://www.ivona.com/en/voices/

While that's a good alternative, and listening to the voice from his you tube test video, they sound really good, the only thing that would concern me is that if I wanted to create a new voice event and response and the response is not in his voice pack, what happens when Gomisan moves on from this sound pack project but customers are requesting further voice response's created for new events and new situations down the line?

If ED is going to be bringing out paid updates that give access to new features / locations / events will Gomisan come back to the voice pack project and update them?

I am sorry to sound negative, but I just like the fact that with control over a text to speech engine, if I think of something I want the computer to say, I can just create it immediately. and not have to send emails off and wait for the possibility of the response being recorded by the artist, and made available in the pack.

I will stick with the 'text 2 speech engine'... however for people who are happy with static voice packs that are offered by Gomisan ( and again I am not concerned over the quality, as it sounds great, just the dynamic of creating new ones) , then his packs are the way to go.
