For the love of God, do something with the word filters

The chat filter is utter garbage and I can not believe that absolutely no work has been done on it.

The fact that "circumstance", for example, is censored as "cir***stance" is ridiculous. Apparently "gimballed" is now being censored as "gimb***ed".

We're all adults, you know. At the very least most of us are. Give us an option to turn off the filter or, again at the very least, implement a chat filter that won't censor something completely innocent.

I find turning off the filters in most online games a good way to see what sort of people you are playing with and if you want to play with them again. Not that I play ED with others but if its a private/wing/squad sort of thing then yeah there should be a way to turn it off.

Saying “by jove that was close” doesn't quite cut the mustard when that four letter word we all know and love starting with F would have made it somehow so much more epic.

This whole filter thing has always made me laugh I remember as a seven year old getting my mouth washed out with soap and water for saying “bloody” (a word I use a lot and still my wife wonders why everything is covered in blood, I might not live in England any more but when at home my accent is very sarf London) In this day and age most kids already know all the swear words even before they go to school.

One last thing since when was Ball, deemed unfit for use in everyday use. Also cir***stance I see the abbreviation its blocking but what if that was spelt with a K as in komma, the Swedish for to come or to arrive. There are many ways around filters I use them here sometimes, also slang is a great way to get past them, but yeah there should be a on/off switch for those who want to type as they see fit.

Also as most people speak english and here I mean if you don't speak each other native tongue then english is often the go to having a filter that is taking chunks out of words is going to be a huge impediment.

Well you know words can be used to talk about s*x or to refer to n****ty bits.
Ban them all i say, they are dangerous and if no words can be said, no one risks being offended.

Just as an aside, in case you were unaware, "bloody" has nothing to do with blood; it's a contraction of "by our lady", to wit, Jesus' mum.

But that's the point. Some will not be. It only takes one overly-pious or money-grabbing reader to attempt to embroil Frontier in some nonsense legal claim they could do without.

It's simply Frontier protecting itself against the ongoing litigation culture.

I have not seen a word filter that works properly, in any game.
Perhaps the technology simply isn't advanced enough yet, as filters still seem utterly unable to consider the context in which something is written.
The current results of such filters can often be outright ridiculous, yes.
Many games do put a disclaimer in, like "online interactions not rated", and make profanity filters a toggle.
Why FD are so adament about keeping it i don't know.
I'm not against filters in general, people can just apply themselves, but in the end i can't ignore reality either....human creativity will always outsmart filters.

I miss the old days of internet gaming. I used to play a lot of online quake 2 deathmatch, the death threats and obscenities were just icing on the cake :)

If this were true, how on earth would Grand Theft Auto survive the lawsuits. Even I felt uncomfortable with the 'torture' scene in GTA5, a bit of harsh language over chat is nothing in comparison.

No, it's a policy. Just like it's this forum's policy to filter swearing. Which is logical. In a multiplayer game environment, it should be an option.

Let alome tbe fact that the game survived for several years without it and wasnt sued into a black hole.

As a teen-rated game I guess Frontier feels obligated to give Elite a filter for bad words. I get it, but I hate it. I hate censorship in any form and would love to be able to toggle it off.
The filter itself seems to be broken though if it jumps at words like "circumstance" and "gimballed". That usually means that it has only fed the words to kill and didn't eat a nice-word dictionary yet and one containing specific terminology important for the game, like, for example "gimballed" or "Guatiti", which is an absolutely fine name for a star system.
