for those that do not have the DK2 or DK1

i know i know, you have been staring at the "order now" button on the oculous rift website.
and let me tell you something if you did actually go through with it you will find that it was worth every penny (until the CV1 comes then its just a waste)
and yesterday i tried it and OH MA GAWD it was...it was......i dont have words to describe the feeling on how its like to transport yourself into elite dangerous. no youre not looking at elite through a screen youre IN elite.
i mean my anacondas body is MUCH longer than i have thought it would have been just staring at my screen. i mean i couldnt even throw a football to the end of it if i wanted to. and arriving in a system and seeing the sun....its huge, i could not believe how amazingly huge it was i mean my jaw dropped. im writing this review because i just got home and wanted to share with you on how amazing the dk2 is and how well FD did on it.
i mean just wow. and last thing i want to add is i remember heading towards a station i accidentally hit the boost and was coming at the station, i actually felt scared, like in a spaceship about to crash into a station...scared. the whole gut dropped and everything. its every bit the hype as everyone says it is.

BUT i recommend people NOT get the DK2 or DK1 and just simply wait till the CV1, unless you have 350 plus shipping to blow. but instead purchase your self a "Google Carboard" which basically puts lens in front of your phone and you can try out basic demos for free!! because after i tried the dk2, i tried my friends iphone with the cardboard with lens and it defiantly was not the same "immersion" you dont feel like you are as in the game as the dk2 does, not even close, but you can save yourself about 300$ (assuming you own a smartphone) and just try it out like that and see what the future holds. its only 1% of what the dk2 offers you, it wont bring immersion like the dk2 but it will hold you off till the cv1 comes.
hope this helps someone.

now that i think about it....i cant go back to a flat screen again....i feel like i just watched blu ray and went back to a black and white tv. CV1 here we come.

Can you use the DK1/DK2 if you wear glasses?

As much as I'd love one of these things, I have to know. Could you use them over the top of a pair of glasses?

Bill.

I wear glasses roughly this size -

790c42f17c6864d0443a0e3ba88dc60d.jpg

- and have no issues with the DK2. I play ED on it for hours.

EDIT: no, that's not me.. my wife can only wish.

I've used the DK2 with glasses with the A lenses and without with the B lenses. Both give a substandard version of the game quality-wise but immersion-wise it was just amazing.

Because it's beta/developer hardware the graphics are a massive downgrade from using a monitor which, combined with motion sickness and not being able to easily use the keyboard made me want to use the Rift less than my normal single monitor setup.

Don't get me wrong. I'm really excited about immersive VR and I want a Rift, but the DK isn't there for me, because glasses and hardware. I will be upgrading my PC when the consumer version is released but I will want to try out the Rift before purchasing nonetheless.

Ps contacts seems like a good solution to the eyesight problems but I didn't test the DK2 when I had a chance unfortunately.

I've used Google cardboard with elite , you get the stereoscopic feel of the depth etc but the image quality is very poor.
Text is unreadable and everything is very pixelated, even at 1080p.

You can do on the cheap though.

All you need is:

Google cardboard or colorcross headset

Opentrack & the Freepie apk (it's included in the opentrack folder)

Kinoconsole or limelight

Fast wireless N router and wireless N Android smart phone

And that's it!

ive been thinking about buyin OR for over a year now, really glad I didn't buy Dk1, been keepin an eye on DK2 for a long time but never had a real reason to buy it until I got ED. I have a bit of disposable money right now and have been seriously considering it. And since the final version hasn't even been announced (at least theres nothing on their website FAQ), it makes me consider it even more. Ive played ED everyday since launch and don't see me stopping anytime soon.

you have to check out the "oculous rift crystal cove" many of the editors who were still skeptical about the dk1 an dk2 were amazed by the crystal cove. wired magazine said the "screen door effect" is gone unless you concentrate really hard on it. which is a bigger success then using the dk2 and having to forget about it.
also the framerate of the crystal cove is 75 fps which they want even better on.
everyone is saying that the CV1 version is the next step.

dude just give google cardboard a try. it will hold you over until the CV1 will come by. you can pick up a "GB" at amazon for like 10 bucks with the lenses. its defiantly not even close to the experience that the dk2 gave me but it will hold you over.
and it will save you about 400$ (including shipping). hope it helps!

Simple. Put on the DK2 and then shout at your wife ... "MOUSE UP ..... MOUSE DOWN ... LEFT A BIT .... RIGHT A BIT ... FIRE .... CUP OF TEA TO MY MOUTH .... VICTORY ROLE". Etc etc.

Those are mostly keyboard instructions right? I need to see if I can get a Victory roll. It is Valentines day after all. Off to don the OR :)

Thanks for the information. Actually, I probably won't need to worry about it because I'm near-sighted and so shouldn't even need them. (Next time I'll put my brain in gear before I start typing.)

Bill.

actually yeah my friend has glasses and is fine with them, but i recommend contacts.

How fine? Because contacts ain't happenin' here. I can't wear them. They're impossible to get onto my eyes. And it depresses me because I really want rift to work great with glasses. If only they'd have prescription lenses for the device...

The only reason I haven't went for one so far is that I know my video card won't cut it. 560ti and showing its age now. So a new video card will add to the Oculus cost.

I've been staring at the BUY NOW button also, but managed to resist. I'll wait for the Consumer Version.

One thing I wonder about them is neck fatigue. They look heavy.

I thought they got the latency low enough to get rid of the motion sickness?

I wonder what the retail price is gonna be. It's this or going to a triple monitor setup, and that'd be at least a couple of grand, if not more.

The DK2 comes with nearsighted lenses which correct for a -2.5 to -3.5 diopter nearsightedness as far as I can tell (can't remember if the specs mention exactly).

This gives a reasonable experience without glasses, if your eyes are around that level of nearsightedness. However, it gives me hope that the company will offer custom eye-correction for your exact prescription down the track, which would be essential for a large proportion of people to enjoy the Rift to its full extent (-:
