OK well from what we saw yesterday, I was trying to link up with another person who is on the same LAN as me. We are both using BT Infinity FTTC internet and on the same LAN.
We were trying to meet up at nearby to our starting station. We tried supercruising away, and back in again, several times. When in open play we could sometimes see other players in SC, but about 90% of the time we could not see each other near the station. About 1 in 10 times, we would meet each other.
We are definitely on each others friends list.
When we set up a private group, the success rate was higher, but still only about 50/50.
What's strange is that when we do manage to meet up in the same instance, the connection appears very solid - we can whizz around and zoom past each other with no discernible lag or problems.
I wonder if the balance between ensuring smooth gameplay and transitions, and getting you to link up with friends, is quite there at the moment - it seems like if there is the slightest delay or issue, the game instantly decides to dump you in an instance on your own.
In fact, I'm wondering if there should be a slider in the options where you can decide whether you want totally smooth gameplay, whan joining an instance or you want to be instanced with your friends even if it means there are delays existing SC or HS.
It may be that some of this was due to me not understanding the points described above and we were in solo mode even thouh we had selected open or group mode, but in some cases we had SC away and back again and still could not see each other.
The other weird thing I noticed was that we were both on the same server in the main menu most of the time, but a couple of times we appeared to be on difference servers, and this didn't make any difference to whether we could see each other or not - I wonder if you are dynamically moved to a different server sometimes whilst playing.
It's pretty frustrating having to log in and out 10 times to get in the same instance with someone in a private group that you've set up, knowing full well that you have a good connection and you are on the same LAN, and also knowing that if you try to travel anywhere else you will likely run into the same problem again.
