Why? First up it was one of those rare occasions where the sequel to the original movie ALIEN (c1979) went off the charts with world wide viewer popularity. Awesome given this series was actually horror movies versus science fiction they just did it in space.
Second the casting department of four people put together some of the best character actors many from comedy in perfect roles we would have never imagined. By the way GOD bless Bill Paxton who died in 2017 of a stroke following heart surgery and will always be remembered for the next 200 years with the words, "Game over man. Game over!".
Third it was produced and filmed in the U.K. with so many amazing TV shows and movies (Space 1999, Star Wars etc) about space while America with the exception of Star Trek were producing silly shows on CBS like Lost in Space! Even the Star Trek movies decades later seem lacking more a picture show for the fans versus great writing. So if humans ever leave our solar system Brits should be running the ship. The exception well a game company that releases an update 14 with dozens of game stopping bugs in all play styles then goes on Christmas vacation. Are they trying to outdo IMO the most bugged game ever released as in Frontier: First Encounters? OK for their passion they can ride along.
Fourth the writers and James Cameron were hitting on all cylinders then it was just a matter of hiring the best support and effect crews in the industry. If James Cameron directs a movie I'll probably pay money to watch it.
So what is the deal? Time moves on. In 1979 there was no Elite game. In 1986 Elite was 2 years old and didn't get to an IBM PC until 1987. The best America had was the Commodore 64 in 1985 which was awesome. Today if the current Elite Dangerous players were on the USS Sulaco instead of the marines they would have kicked you know what taking out the xenomorphs without enhanced AXI or Guardian weapons. Then we wouldn't have had to suffer through those awful Aliens 3 and 4 sequels!
I firmly believe if a U.K. production team developed an Elite Dangerous movie it would make the Star Wars franchise look silly and change the way science fiction movies are made. Die Hard (c1988) with Bruce Willis no one at the time could see him as an action hero totally changed how action movies were made. Frontier is really missing an amazing opportunity...but get the game working first before the movie is released!
