Forget powerplay, this is where it's at!

Tired of broken background sim, weird PP design decisions and above all lack of feedback.

Ditched Hudson, sold my vulture, and picked up a DB Explorer to head out into the black. Thinking of taking a northwesterly track from Fed space, probably will go below horizon because I'm guessing I'll find more unexplored systems out there. Nothing like getting away from civilization to clear one's head!

Any feedback on the DBE as an explorer? With Explorer in its name I assume it should do well, it looks like it has an excellent jump range.

Hauler has good range:) But I'd argue its better to explore in a ship you feel comfortable in first and jump range as a secondary requirement. I'd ask how much cash you have to play around with first. If you had a good vulture, remember to sell off the parts and mods before swapping it for a different ship, then you might have enough to get a good asp, somthing like this http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/05A5D5A4D4A5D5C------040402023e4a0j02022i2f.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ== (Id go with a thrusters, but that adds cost) , asp gives you a bit more room to play around with builds, more mod slots etc and a better fuel scoop, which is oh so very important, faster scooping, stops the space madness setting in as quickly

My first trip outside of the bubble was in a DBX and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

The DBX is competitive with the Asp as an exploration ship, although most folks will tell you the asp is better because of being able to fit a larger fuel scoop.

The DBX is unique in that it runs at a very low temperature, which alleviates your single biggest hazard as an explorer.

I eventually went with the Asp because of the roomier cockpit, but I still have a softspot for the DBX.

Currently Exploring in a multipurpose set up Cobra. I am a little shorter jump range, but can fight if needed, can explore, and can carry a little booty. I like it. Trying to decide if I am eventually going to go for an ASP, but I keep looking at the money and going COBRA is a nice mellow ride.

Welcome to the black. All before you is yours.

DBE is a fine Explorer, but the scooping issue suits a slower exploration style, armed to the teeth. If you want to fly like an arrow, get an asp, but DBE is excellent otherwise

I've not used a DBE (been out exploring since before they were launched!) but my asp can do 2000LY an hour including scooping and scanning at every star on the way. So if you're really in a hurry nearly 3000 might be possible? I'm 22,000 LY out and will be turning for home fairly soon so it's still going to be 12 hours at full speed for me to get back!

Bought the DBE kitted it out and without even testing it gone straight out there, now only 4,000 LY from Sagi A and loving every jump!.

My Eternal Transit (DBE) is getting ready to head out into the black, although with a lower class jump drive (just don't have the 5 mil for an A5, and don't feel like spending the next few weeks trading/bounty hunting/mining to get it), so I've only got about a 20ly range. But, on the plus side, I'll probably find more unexplored systems, since they'll be spots people skip over with their longer jump ranges ;) Love the ship too...runs massively cool, can scoop fast, and is manuverable in SC and realspace.

Question to explorers - Jump in, foghorn, scoop, jump on, or jump in, foghorn, scoop, detailed scan of everything, then jump on?

I have been doing the Jump in, foghorn, scoop, detail scan everything, jump on. Got some great money, XP, and a few first finds, but it takes forever. Suggestions?

Whatever suits your mood.
I use economical routes, fast routes, honk only, detail scan, all different combinations depending on how I feel.
I've been exploring since mid June, and I don't think I'm even halfway to Sag A yet.
I like the DBE, but I preferred the size 6 b-rated fuel scoop that the Asp can fit.

The DBE is a strange little ship. It's easy to fly for beginners, but difficult to master even for advanced explorers. Some people think an Asp can travel faster because of the slow fuel scooping, but that isn't entirely true. Both ships can cover 1000 LY in 22-24minutes. This is the "difficult to master" part though. It's dead easy to travel that fast in an Asp, but requires an intense amount of concentration, dexterity, heat management, and plotting logistics to go that fast in a DBE.

So it depends on what you want. If you want to go slow and plod through the Galaxy, then the DBE is a fine ship. If you want to go quickly but feel at ease, then your better off with an Asp. However, if you want to make exploring as exciting as it can be while tearing through the Galaxy at breakneck speeds, try speed jumping in a DBE. The closest analogy in gameplay would be trying to shake an Elite Python interdiction in a D grade sidewinder. Not the most relaxing way to see the Galaxy, but definitely one of the most interesting.

Besides the heat management and the interesting cockpit, my favorite thing about the DBE is the helpful proximity warning lights at the top of the canopy. Very useful for dealing with NS and WD boundary lines that can become invisible when you travel slowly, or aren't aimed dead at the target's physical collision cross section. Keep an eye on the radar hud for the red boundary line as well ;)
