Forgot to check mission distance.

Remember to check. Don't be silly like me.
Right, off to the shops while my ship is in SC.....

It's far enough when mission grinding for rank. I take your point, though. (I've been to Hutton Orbital. Seemed longer than my Sag A* trip.....)

Understood...

I've been caught out by some relatively long SC runs when taking missions for rank too - I sympathise, I really do! :)

I did that when I took a long-range smuggling mission with a load of shadow deliveries. I normally allow about 20 minutes for each mission, though they often take a lot less. The long-range smuggling one had a much shorter time-scale. I had sold all my slaves at Robigo to stack more missions and travel more quickly to the delivery area.

Anyway, i was keeping an eye on the clock and had planned my delivery schedule, which involved three trips to a station to load up with slaves. I had just visited the market for slaves and had one more shadow delivery before the long-range one. When I got to the shadow delivery station, I realised that I'd forgotten to buy the slaves. I therefore had to waste 20 minutes going back to get them, but still, I had plenty of time, or so I thought until I dropped into the last system with 18 minutes left on the clock and saw that the station was over 400,000ls. I must have experienced just about every emotion on the way to the station. I finally made it with 3 seconds to spare.

They can catch you out if you are not careful. I will always try to check it out 1st. Often, if I have no system info, I will shy away from said mission, because I can guarantee that the game, is going to be laughing at me, as I spend 20 minutes in super cruise, avoiding bad guys.

The thing i don't understand with these long distance super cruise runs: Is how the ship knows to slow down, half way? You don't even have to target the destination, as soon as you get to the half distance point, it stop accelerating and begins to slow down. Why?

Has to do with gravity wells, the closer you get to them, the more you slow down.

a short while back i built myself an FDL just for the hell of it, and for her maiden voyage i took her on a short jaunt doing a delivery mission for 100k - just a jump of about 8Ly, then 700Ls or so to the station. unfortunately due to inattention i'd accidentally picked a multi-part mission.

second leg - 550,000Ls to the station.
third leg - 450,000Ls to the station.

overall, a nice neat million Ls in SC that happily destroyed any profit i might have made, wasted on wear and tear repairs. i've never taken another multi-part mission since.

Sometimes I think Frontier don't care if ED is successful & are just a group of bored billionaires with a pathological hatred of astronomy/physics/Sci-Fi nerds & gamers..creating some of the most un-fun, frustrating things to do in a game you can possibly imagine! That is in a game, the raison d'etre of which is FUN!

OP - yeah I lol'd at your avatar too...I wonder which way you'll be voting!? :p

Was certain when I chose the avi for my online personas about 7 years ago. Now not entirely sure.

These super long supercruising systems annoy me.
There's nothing fun about flying in a straight line for 20 minutes.
I also don't like that at the half way mark, you stop accelerating, and begin slowing down.
I'd prefer it if we just kept accelerating to max speed until you get much closer to the star/planet.

I found a system with loads of goodies to scan, but they were all 500kls away. So I just scanned the main star and left.... I also wasn't the first to do so!
