Forum faction icon behind post?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum section but it seems to be the most likely as it pertains the Eliteangerous factions.

I have seen a number of users post with faction symbols slightly opaque in the top-right corner of their post and I have to say it looks fetching indeed. My question is how does one obtain said faction symbol? I have searched on the forums and on google for a few days now just wondering how to get one.

Is there a way to link your profile to your forum account?
Is it a backer only thing?

Any help is appreciated and I apologise again if this is in the wrong section.

Go Settings (top right) then 'General Settings' in the bar on the left, then scroll down to 'Elite Faction'.

Then choose Federation, of course.
