Forum GOTY Thread

Ok. What is your game of the year? Please name just one! (Honorable mentions are ok)

Mine is Nier Automata. I started it last year (2017) but finished it this year, and it’s easily one of the best games I played during the past 20 years. Yoko Taro is a brillant genius. This story really only works as a computer game. The ending (E) just left me speechless. Perfect pacing, absolutely amazing dynamic music score, superfluid combat. He also managed to bring across the core ideas of existentialism without being pretentious or banal. Masterpiece!

Haven't seen any game this year worthy of that title. I'm sure the top reviewers say differently.
You know. The ones that sack groceries for a day job.

I`m picking Assassin's Creed Odyssey - ignoring Ubisoft rabid attempts at sucking you in to microtransactions game itself was just fantastic and it has one of the best open worlds I`v seen next to Witcher. Funny fact, grindy nature of character progression
that was put in ACO to make you pay for stuff actually did not bother me as I like take my time and "grind" in such a game - take this Ubi!

Honorable mentions: Subnautica and No Mans Sky.

For me... Battletech. I think I only purchased three games this year: Battletech, Surviving Mars, and No Man's Sky. The former is great, the middle is decent, while the latter... is not my cup of tea.

Well, Elite is my GOTY every year but I guess it doesn't count. :D

So from games other than Elite I pick Assassin's Creed Odyssey. That game really surprised me with its sublime open world, RPG mechanics, great characters and interesting stories. With just a tiny bit of exaggeration it's The Witcher 3 of 2018.
As honorable mention.. I have to give it to the Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Bigger and better in every way than previous two games in the rebooted series and an epic end to a trilogy that I really enjoyed.
Second honorable mention would go to JWE. Because dinosaurs and the unholy amount of time I've spent with the game (and still going)

Red Dead redemption 2 with no hesitation. A pure masterpiece of single player storytelling and gameplay...multiplayer is mildly carp until Rockstar break away from the 'Yeehaw GTA' mode of multiplayer offerings and allowing 12 year old social retards to dominate and ruin every server. An invite only server option like they did for the original Red Dead would have saved Rockstar a load of flak at the end of the day.

Honourable mentions:

Out of the PC selection, I'd say AC Odyssey stands a fair head and shoulders above all of the others. I liked Shadow of the Tomb Raider...but still too similar to other regurgitations of the same franchise for it to be "I really liked it a lot" material. It was certainly very good....and I've still got the mild hots for Lara.

For the spacey things...didn't bother with X-4 because I dislike corporation building simulators as a general rule...Hellion (for me) with the new single player modes and ever so slowly progressing along as it is, all without major dramatic fanfares, hype or mass popular acclaim from the general space nerd fan base takes the prize from the rest.

Special award for continued mismanagement, predatory marketing and singular lack of applied effort:

Star Citizen... I play it, certainly enjoy the time I spend in it...but it's Star Citizen at the end of the day...with all the caveats and disclaimers that could possibly apply to those statements...

Red dead 2...no hesitation in that answer cos what comes second is a long way down the list and RDR2 wins by a mile. Im currently on my third playthrough of the single player campaign having barely dipped my toes in the multiplayer pool at all. Been playing it every single day since it released and showing no signs of slowing down yet. Very very few games have had such a profound effect in 30 odd years of gaming...its game of the decade far as Im concerned and thats based on the single player aspect alone.

Its not talked about much on this forum cos its a console only game, fer now at least...and on this forum...? Its the elephant in the room nobody talks about in pc land ^

The best quote I heard about RDR2 reportedly came from the co-owner of CD Projekt Red, ‎Marcin Iwiński... he said that further work on Cyberpunk 2077 was to be delayed until the entire dev staff had finished playing RDR2 ;)

Hopefully it will get a PC port. :)

Rockstar is quite consistent and predictable for delivering the best sandbox single player experience for quite some time.
Not only very polished, but for a change I love the (mostly) realistic setting.

The staggering attention to detail and the gameplay is always fantastic, I could never understand how some could compare modern rail shooters like Uncharted to these masterpieces.

All good things come to those who wait...I hear that 2019 will be a good vintage year and the pc will get a slice of that cake soon enough. I was actually surprised to see them do the same thing they did with GTA5, I always thought that to be a one off move but twice is a pattern.

The upside being the pc gets the polished version and RDR2, while nigh on one the best games currently on the planet, was/is not without a few bugs...not major or serious but there all the same. Little things like not being able to retrieve yer saddle in at least one camp due to the design of the furniture...got around it by taking a mission which starts ye on a saddled horse or simply upgrade the camp to have its own stable...but still vexing at times.

Without too many teasers, the last camp sees yer saddle appear on the roof of the house which is impossible to retrieve...a small oversight no doubt but still bloody vexing all the same. Weapon of choice in mp appears to be the varmint rifle...expect that to get heavily nerfed ^
