Forum Vets, How does Shield Strength actually Work?

I'm talking about the following statistics:

Minimum Strength
Optimal Strength
Maximum Strength

I'm assuming they either have to do something with Optimal Mass, or the number of pips you put into SYS (Like Minimum is zero pips, Optimal two pips, and Maximum is four).

I've played Elite for a long time now and never really figured out how these numbers are calculated to MJs. I know Engineering raises these numbers, but I don't know what they mean.

I don't know what they mean either lol. I look at MJs, resistance numbers, and regen times, as they are all that really matter. Optimal this and that-- nothing I've ever paid attention to.

The more pips you have in SYS, the more damage your shields will withstand when under attack, or in a collision. If you're about to be rammed, or think you may be taking a load of plasma to the eye, don't get caught with zero pips to SYS.

It doesn't, real men hull tank.

Crap! Wrong Game!
Reconsiders wisdom of hull tanking...

Well, it works for Federal Corvettes and Anacondas!

As has already been mentioned, check out Down to Earth Astronomy on youtube. He's done a very comprehensive (albeit long-winded, but that's because Elite is as transparent in-game as its development out of game) video on how shields work in Elite. If you're the min-maxing or 'I gotta know' type, it's an excellent resource for questions such as yours.

There was a forum post with some cool graphs at one point. No idea where that's gone though, as that was old forum stuff
