Found an Issue Mining Misplaced Hotspot

No Alexandrite in Alexandrite Hotspot - HIP 69796, Planet 4 B Ring

Hello,

I wanted to report an issue I've encountered in the system HIP 69796, specifically in the Planet 4 B Ring. I visited the Alexandrite Hotspot twice, expecting to find Alexandrite, but after extensive mining, I found none at all.

I made multiple passes through the hotspot, and despite targeting various asteroids, there wasn't a single trace of Alexandrite in any of my scans. I've attached four in-game screenshots to document the experience, showing my position in the hotspot and the results from my mining attempts.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Could this be a bug, or is there something I'm missing here? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Alexandrite is a core material rather than a laser-mined one, so it won't show up on the prospector limpets like that. Generally the hotspots refer to the core materials - though in a few cases they do also increase the yield of laser-mined ore for things which can be obtained either way, if the ring already has that (so a Platinum Hotspot in a metallic ring will increase cores and laser mining, whereas a Platinum Hotspot in a rocky ring is cores-only).

You'll need to bring Seismic Charge launchers to break the asteroids apart, and a Pulse Wave Analyser utility to highlight the asteroids which can be split apart for their cores. An Abrasion Blaster might also be useful to get a bit more material out of the core.

It's been a long time since I've been core mining so hopefully someone else can explain how to do that a bit better if it's not clear.

Use your pulse wave analyser which highlights rocks with stuff in them. Now look for a really really bright 🌞 one. Fire a prospector into it. And it'll be a core asteroid containing what you seek.

If it contains nothing then it was the wrong sort of bright. I used to go to night vision, set the PWS on a rotary control and get it running continuously, as I approached a suitable rock a grid like structure would appear that was usually the one to hit with a prospector.

However while there is a good chance of that containing something it doesn’t guarantee it contains your intended target.

Hotspots are quite large and while they contain more than the equivalent bit of plain ring still most rocks in there will just be rocks.

But why would there be NOTHING? I find it all over when looking for other minerals and metals.

Cores are rare, usually one in 30-50 km
Hoping to find a core using only prospectors is a bit like winning the lottery

As advised, use Pulse Wave Analyzer, learn how to differentiate cores from non-core yellow asteroids then use core mining tools to break the asteroid (seismic charge launcher and abrasive blaster)

Also, googling Elite Dangerous Core Mining may point you to some guides

Also, learn the shapes of core asteroids and how to spot fissures by eye (with the help of NV). I continuously fire the PWA, inspect the brightest glowing ones, try to remember if they fit the shape (and fail when I haven't core mined for too long), and only if I see fissures on the surface I fire a prospector.

The fissures look kind of the vintage LucasArts logo.
