Found out yesterday that the HUD is displayed on the cockpit glass.

Played since alpha but hardly any combat since launch.

Slowly but surely I traded myself up to the awsome (for my purposes) Python.

During that time (since launch day) only had 9 fights, having managed to run away from most npc interdictions and submitted to Player ones and gladly offered cargo.

Once my Python was kitted out I started to learn to fight npcs at extraction sites. I was having a great time finding the correct loadout.

Within a few days I was combatting small craft and getting careless (was too easy in this ship) and without checking the ship type I saw a wanted flag, warrant scanned (it wasn't allied with any of my chosen factions) I attacked. 1 minute in I found my shields are going down fast - then I looked at the ship type and I am in a fight with a Deadly Anaconda - oops.

In the end I won but at the expense of 76% of my hull, sparks and fumes in the cockpit and a blown canopy. Not sure I have been this damaged and not lost the ship (or if I did it was many releases ago). 15min count down timer.

While heading for a station to repair (the first didn't - next time I'll check the system map before flying 1500ls to an outpost), I noticed that the in space hud elements don't show where the cockpit glass was missing.

I had a great time playing with the effect. Brilliant.

I found this out while I was mixing it with one of these Generals for a federal mission. A really nice touch, this. And quite a surprise, then.

Even better, the canopy generates many of the sounds you hear in flight. With the canopy broken, much of it becomes muted, and the rest muffled by the sound of your breathing in your gas mask.

It is also quite a challenge to try and aim at something when your HUD is physically missing. Although I still wonder why the pilot cannot be physically killed by a stray laser blast or bullet when the canopy is blown off and shields are gone.

I once had it completely blown out and had to use the instruments to navigate and land. That was a sense of achievement.
