FoV setting.

If I adjust it, is there a reset to default button?

And I was wondering if anyone had a good setting to use for an Asp Explorer? I use a 27" 1080p display.

I'm hoping FoV adjustment might amount to better sense of scale? I'm an explorer so this is important to me.

Many thanks.

Graphics settings file is easier for this. I think the default is 80? Someone will likely correct me.

If memory serves you can go to 105 before you start to notice some fisheye.

So it's NOT just me! I thought I was the only one who never could get the Asp cockpit to feel quite...Right.

Wish we could get a little wider view, without moving further from our instrument panel...

I'd like to know if the FOV changes depending on your aspect ratio?

i.e. I've got a 2560x1080 monitor, which you'd think should have a wider field of view to really emphasise that panoramic wrap around effect.

But it still seems to be at the default value.

Yeah. I think the canopy looks way too close & small on a normal display. That video with the Type-7 today though... I want to know how he got his sense of scale right like that.

Fisheye in practice means objects get distorted the further they are from the center. Planets become elliptic, for example. Max FOV is very low in the menu, 65 or something. Use the ini for higher settings. I am at 85 IIRC, lots of fisheye but way better sense of scale, plus you actually start to notice ships have very different cockpits/bridges. :p

Are you saying the available settings in game don't suffer fisheye?

I can notice some fisheye at the default settings and beyond the 60 degrees vertical the slider goes to, it gets bad enough that I won't use anything higher on a non-curved display at distances I feel comfortable with.

This, and many other games, use rectilinear projection, which preserves the angles and straight lines, but makes some distortion near the corners inevitable unless the FoV you are trying to display matches that of the display in your field of view.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of always referring to horizontal FOV. Too many years playing games where horizontal was the only option to adjust.

Vertical FoV is definitely going to be around 60-65 max for tolerable play for anyone..

For exploring I'd use as much FOV as your brain can process for that nice panorama view. Especially on the class cube aka ASP this is awesome. In most games I like to use a 110 FOv, which is by far not the top cap but certainly not the newbie 70 beginner level. But this is for action paced games where aiming is required so anything above 110 makes it hard to aim for me.

Since you are exploring I would try a 160 angle for a somewhat realistic FOV compared to our eyes. Our eyes can see 60-80 degrees each while the last 20 degrees can not be focused on. Adding them together and palced correctly you will achieve a 160 angle. Otherwise, go for 120. I highly recommend you using a FOV blur addition from a graphic mod like EDFX as this further contributes to the ultimate exploring experience and adds that extra bit of realism. Also, EDFX adds more cool features like deeper colours and is basically a must have for any explorer. :)
