FPS tips for low end systems.

Well, i got some fun out of Odysee. Ever since nvidia came out to challenge 3dfx, i've always really enjoyed tweaking graphics settings to make the most out of hardware that wasn't supposed to be running something. Sure elite isn't this, but still had the best time, its been many years since having to. Managed to achieve a console grade 30 fps.. ish.. in stations so just in case this helps anyone:

Mine: 1060 3gb with a 2500k@4.1. The cpu was never under load, so..

Nvidia control panel: Interesting settings were
  • Low latency mode: UItra
  • Power management mode: I always thought this was smart enough not to nerf it under load, but apparently not, maximum performance helps.
  • Turn on triple buffering (it helps, but you need vsync too)
  • Turn on vsync to adaptive half refresh (i did this in game too, but just in case).
The other classic setting was cuda off the gpu, but that didn't help.

Game Settings
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Model draw distance: Lowest possible
  • Texture quality at high didn't make difference for me even with 3 gigs of ram ?!?
  • Shadow quality: Low (makes a huge difference)
  • AA: FXAA (sometimes this smooths out the experience, it did here)
  • Environment quality: Low (makes a huge difference)
  • Turn supersampling down to less than 1.. i used 0.85. This makes it basically look like vr in normal mode.. and its basically unplayable.. but hey 30fps. You can start from there.

Most of the other settings could be left at high or ultra. I turned depth of field off too.

Anyway.. this release is beyond words. There's no quick tip or pointer that could help frontier right the ship. I can't see why it was released at all. And to think the next 6 months will be having to deal with white knights and frontiers community managers telling us that this thing is in fact the second coming and that wrong. Best of luck.

The biggest thing that doesn't work is it has nothing to do with elite dangerous. If you want to play a spaceship game, none of this expansion matters. If you want to play an fps, none of the space game matters. Bolting them together has made both of them worse. At least until the game is finished?

Also the armstrong moment turns out to be a sound effect. Wow, that's the most expensive premium game content ive seen. The UI on proper inspection is also beyond words. The designer had the brief of making the ui look like the arx store.. there's no care at all for use and still has huge bugs in it. How can people defend this stuff?

Sorry, good luck.
