Frag cannons worthy alternative to multicannon?

This would be used on my fighter trader Cobra, medium hard point, alongside a cannon.

Wondering how effective frag is against smaller ships? Ammo is not a concern.
 
Frags are much worse against small ships than they are large ones. You need to be extremely close to land any appreciable damage and unless you're literally crashing into your target you'll still be losing a lot of damage to missed pellets. In terms of average damage output over time, frags aren't even particularly more destructive than the much more versatile multicannons or even just cannons.
 
Frags are okay, especially against bigger ships, and they're quite good at taking out modules even if you're not targeting them specifically. As has been pointed out, against small ships you really need to be up close, and you don't get the fringe benefit of module damage against them as small ships have less health.

Double shot frag with screening shell is monstrous, the damage is insane. Range is however very poor.

Balance your loadout with some lasers or rails to deal with threats beyond their limited range.

Multicannons feel like pea shooters in comparison but are a lot more versatile.
 
found frags the best when there were just 10 shots in a mag. perfect for assasination missions
and now with 180 shots available im thinking to give up lasers.. dolphin, for example, with 2 frags - just death machine lol
 
i have an all frag courier. AspEs and cobras are easier to shoot than eagles and sideys (granted, the hardpoint placement of a courier isn't ideal for frags - cmkIII will be better). i was musing building a frag cmkIII, so i'm interested about your findings. that said, if you can, get one with a corrosive special (or a small MC alongside with that), as the APV of frags is a bit low. i love frags - my combat python is build around them.
 
Aren't MCs and frag-cannons almost complete opposites in use?

Personally, when I bother to fit a frag-cannon to a ship, I always just fit one, in the biggest slot available, so it's available to deter people who are intent on using FCs of their own.
 
Frags are decent, but it depends on how you fly and your time on target. Against NPCs, my time on target is very high at range and up close, so while the frags do a lot of damage up close, in reality I'm missing out on all the time I could be laying into them with multis. The reload time on frags is also pretty maddening, imo.

I think they are more useful in PvP, where you time on target should be considerably lower. Frags also obviously compliment ramming builds. (Shoutout to Fraggy McFragface) Overall frags are my least favorite weapon in Elite, but not by much. Pacifiers are good fun.
