Hardware & Technical Frame Rate cap?

Hey Techy people,

I have a 60hz monitor and with vsync on in game the card is of course limited to 60hz, but I have always been told to turn off vsync as a matter of course which would give a higher frame rate. But as I understand it if the monitor is only capable of displaying at 60hz then whats the point of the gpu firing out 180?

So the question is, is it better to keep vsync on, or turn it off and limit the card directly through it's settings to 60 or 62hz (allowing for +\-)?

I have Nvidia 780ti card and decent computer so it's capable of running high fps, but is there any point stressing it?

Your knowledge is appreciated :)

i too have a 60hz monitor, coupled with a 770 card. I have VSync on.

The card will happily throw out multiple hundreds of fps but at a much higher 'stress' on the GPU (temp etc...) Hence I opted for VSync ON to hopefully extend the longevity of the GPU.

In my opinion I would set vsync on if you have acceptable framerates limited by the monitor, but turn if off if you're struggling to reach that. I would also use vsync to do the limiting, not other software feature. That way you can be sure it is synced to the monitor's refresh to give the optimal experience. By limiting the framerate in this way, you're only generating what you need to see. Your GPU will use less power, maybe make less fan noise.

So why run unlimited at lower framerates? In that case you may struggle to synchronise efficiently so even partial updates can help in the perception of responsiveness, at the risk of reduced image quality at times.
