Newcomer / Intro Frame shift drive upgrade

I have an Anaconda. All my core internals are used. I have an 8E power plant an 7A thrusters and 6A frame shift drive. How do I swat so I have a 7A drive and 6A thrusters? It won't let me swap one out with something ese as it says its essential.

The core internals are fixed: they go in their specific place, and if the size for the FSD is 6, then that's the maximum size for it.

(Swapping the Thrusters and the FSD would be like swapping the engine and the wheels in a car 😉)

8E power plant is a bit of a puzzler. 8D would be nearly a third of the mass as well as providing more power.

As others have said, the slot size for FSD and Thrusters is why you can't put in a bigger FSD, although you could of course fit smaller thrusters but without knowing what you are trying to achieve we can't really advise you properly.

EDIT: Seems you have had an issue with your Anaconda for nearly two years. Maybe post us a link to your build* and tell us what you want to use it for and we can try to steer you in the right direction.

* e.g. https://s.orbis.zone/iumb (just a nonsense build)

By switching toa Beluga, Cutter or T-10. Those are the only three ships in ED that take a size 7 FSD.
Keep in mind that this doesn't mean that they can jump further - but that wasn't your question 😛

Seriuosly: if you post your current loadout (e.g. as a Coriolis link) and tell us what you want to use the ship for, I'm pretty sure some helpful comments will come up.

Almost the only reason to have 'E' rated core modules in a ship is if you were going to sell it and wanted to minimise the losses in the sale, even then it should be the smallest module that you can fit.

The 'E' rated modules only advantage is they are the cheapest, 'D' rated are lightest, 'B' rated are the toughest and heaviest, 'A' rated have the best output and efficiency but are the most expensive 'C' rated are available.

As mentioned, you cannot do this. The Conda cannot fit class 7 FSD, which is actually OK since this ship has silly mass. And though you can downgrade thruster class, that's inadvisable.

I'd suggest aiming for this configuration at the start. Engineering can allow you to make more specialized builds, but in a general sense I'd suggest these for core slots

Thanks for all your reply's. I can't get my head around engineering so was looking for other ways to improve jump distance.

The power plant was a miss type. It's an 8A

Generally, get the biggest A-rated FSD you can fit, and apply Increased Range with Mass Manager (or Deep Charge for small drives if you prefer).

Try to unlock the Guardian FSD Booster, which can give you up to another 10.5 Ly.

If it's an exploration ship, try D-rated modules (except FSD and power plant) and apply Lightweight and Stripped Down to whatever you can.

Applying Heavy Duty and Deep Plating to the default lightweight armour adds no mass, so it won't affect range.

Human technology brokers have double-engineered 5A drives you can unlock, which have the best possible range. Hopefully they'll add new the new class 3, 4 and 6 ones at some point.

I'd suggest (if you play on PC) to get yourself one of the third party apps (I use EDDiscovery) that monitor your local logfiles and can (among many, many other things) export your ship configuration directly to Coriolis.

+1 for Ashnak’s advice re third party apps. There are so many of them but none are essential, just very useful. Coriolis and ED Engineer are two I use a lot to create builds and keep track of materials (those I have, those I need and those that I can trade for the ones I need.)

EDDiscovery is one I enjoy for exploring alongside Elite Observatory and Inara does almost everything very well….I also remember finding Edison invaluable back in the days of using coordinates to find some surface POIs.

Its just down to you where the balance lies between using in-game tools and 3rd party apps. I get far more satisfaction tracking down a half decent trade route in-game than using the highest paying one from Inara’s shared knowledge….but, blaze your own and all that:)

Man, that's awesome information, I did not know that. Ya, I have an Anaconda with 52.5 Ly jump range and I'm pretty sure I can get it close to 60 Ly (that's with a 2 bay SRV hanger and 2 AFMU's no weight on the later, just space).
