I am a massive fan of the Frank Herbert Dune series. They are some of the greatest science fiction books ever written.

I love the David lynch adaption from 1984, even though it was flawed for many reasons... but it has some stunning visuals, haunting scenes and a wonderful soundtrack.

The SyFy channel created a TV mini series adaption back in 2000 which wasnt as visually spectacular as David lynch's version, but did do a much better job at story telling and pacing.

DUNE has never really had a successful full budget adaption even though its one of the richest and most imaginative science fiction stories out there.

Well it seems that now it is being revisited and with someone i currently consider at the moment to be one of hollywood's best creative talents and the best man for the wonderful world of DUNE to have as a director.....Denis Villeneuve.

He did a wonderful job on Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 and im extremely excited to see what he can do for the DUNE series.

“Most of the main ideas of Star Wars are coming from Dune so it’s going to be a challenge to [tackle] this,” Villeneuve told Fandom. “The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw. In a way, it’s Star Wars for adults. We’ll see.”

Villeneuve explained that he has “massive respect” for David Lynch and that he was impressed by Lynch’s Dune and its “very strong qualities,” but it’s not the adaptation he has “dreamed of.” So, rather than acknowledge the other film at all, he’s going to go “back to the book” and resurrect the images that he created in his head when he first read it.

Looking forward to it.

The original is my favourite film of all times. I can't even count how many times i've watched it. Maybe not triple figures, but certainly high doubles.

"And how can this be? For he IS the Kwizatzh Haderach!"

Brilliantly done, even if it deviated a lot from the books.

The Sci-fi version was ok. Not quite as strong acting, but a lot more faithful to the books.

Another Dune film, as long as its decent, will be highly welcome.

Great news and I`m very happy that Villeneuve wil lbe directing this - very high hopes for the movie. I`m also a big fan of Lynch Dune and really like the soundtrack for it too.

Needs to be a TV show imo. To much to cram into a film. Also - nerf the Kwisatz Haderach! It's OP!

The Lynch Dune movie was 2 hours long originally, and the special edition when released was 3 hours long.
But still the film wasnt brilliant at explaining things or being very true to the books.

The 2000 Tv series had 3 episodes each at 90 minutes in lengh which is a total runtime of about 4.6 hours and that series did manage to pace well enough to be understandable to someone who had not read the books.

Cinema in recent years has flurted with 3 hour long films and with DVD/BluRay special editions (lord of the ring for example) 4+ hour versions.

It would be nice to see 2 films get made, but i think that would be risky. Intelligent Science fiction typically doesnt sell well and if the movie has an inflated budget which a DUNE remake would require, i would bet the first movie would be a financial failure and the second would lose its greenlight.

If they could squeeze the entire movie into a 3.5 hour showing..(not unprecedented).. for cinema bums... a special edition BluRay at 4+ hours could be done.

Just pray that it doesnt get taken up by NetFlix... because their original movie pedigree is pretty poor.

Duncan Jones - Mute, for example.... Geeshh.....

Also lets hope that Paul Atreides doesnt become Paula Atreides thanks to SWJ.

Eh, no hrethgir can hope to implement a perfect dune movie. ;)

The big issue is that many of the later books are unfilmable, especially God Emperor of Dune. The two miniseries did a fine job covering the first three books.

I must say that the prequel books -
especially Butlerian Jihad and Machine Crusade - have grown on me recently. They would be extremely well suited for a visually opulent space action/drama trilogy. I'd love to see cymeks on the big screen.

Well i would imagine IF Dune is successfull the later books covering the Atreides children could be made... Why do you feel God Emperor of Dune is unfilmable?

The prequel novels could make for movies of more conventional Science Fiction. But these books are not very iconic except within the DUNE fandom and even then many fans go so far as to reject them as canon.

Because most of the conflicts happen internally inside character minds, and there's a whole swath of chapters devoted to how he remembers the distant past, all the people and things that nobody but him can recall. All these musings on how he despises knowing the future, how there's only one being that escapes his gaze, and so forth. Plus there's really not that much happening. I imagine that if they turned this book into a movie, you'd have two characters talking to each other about food, and then suddenly one murders the other. In the book it makes perfect sense, because you read the train of thoughts of what a person thinks the other person might know or do...

Not to mention some of the later things in Chapterhouse would just come across as super cheesy. Like someone suddenly being super fast like the Flash, simply because genetics and jumps of evolution and stuff.

Or how they awaken the memories of a Ghola. Or the Imprinting of the Honored Matre. There's a LOT of weird stuff in Dune.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I'm a big fan of Dune. If anyone can do a remake justice then it is
Denis Villeneuve. Looking forward to it!

ya hya chouhada!

One of my favorite sci fi movies and books, however this is almost an impossible task and it would be better off as a TV show.

The David Lynch film is third in my list of worst movies ever made. Behind only Highlander 2 and Judge Dredd.

The scifi miniseries was brilliant.

The book Dune is too complex to cover in one movie. Unless they do a LoTR and do 3 4-hour movies it will be a fail.
