I wonder what the reason is for not having it now, technically or out of 'immersive' or 'sim' considerations.
I must admit, a spectator mode would be great to admire your ship.

They can view a lot more in the hangar for instance.

The mega-thread mentioned in the previous post basically boils down to this. External views were not implemented because the devs always wanted the game to be a cockpit-centric experience. That said it has been mentioned that external 'beauty-views' may come in the form of being able to buy a camera bot that can be launched and remotely controlled from the cockpit allowing you to look around your ship (maybe to inspect for damage or something). The external views wont give any kind of tactical advantage as you wont be able to pilot your ship because you will be controlling the bot.

The way I see it, it is about trying to maintain perspective as best as possible.

Especially with the impending mass uptake of virtual reality, maintaing a perspective is such an important thing in bringing in this sense of being 'inside' a virtual world.

There are times when I do what I think is a really slick manuver and think about what it might of looked like from outside. I'd buy a bot cam if they don't weigh too much.

Personally I would like it if a bot cam could be deployed to record combat for analysis later on at a station. They could even charge you credits for your own telemetry data

I'm kind of surprised the orbitals don't have some mirrored windows which would give us glimpses of our ships. Just seems a perfect fit. Maybe reflective of some sort anywayz...

I can understand maintaining the first-person perspective. It worked beautifully for the Far Cry games. However, that only works if you have some freedom to move about and inspect your ship from the outside, which, as I understand it, will be implemented at a later point. Right now, it's not, and I have no way to look at my ship!
