Fresh Win10 install?

I just did the same Saturday night and Sunday morning was a real pain as i got mad and did not take any proper precautions and just clean installed. Same experience running much better after a 5 hour reload of everything. Oculus, win 10, nvidea, Saitek, voice attack, ED, etc.

Oh make sure you go back in win settings and turn off all the auto stuff like updates and the game dvr

Turn off all windows game dvr and game mode settings. I recently reinstalled and also had to upon install unplug the ether net and immediately pause all updates to stop windows from installing 388.13 automatically. Then got the latest nvidia driver installed from a downloaded version then plugged the ether net and did the regular updates. Everything runs great now.

I've just done a complete wipe and install of Win 10.

Downloaded the Win 10 media creation tool, exported and printed off my licence key by using a powershell script and then went for it.

Only stumbling block was after I wiped my partition it wouldn't let me install because of a MBR and GPT issue. Quick Google and I had to delete the other two small partitions on the drive and I was ready to go.

Very quick and easy and was pretty much up to date with updates. No spending 4 hours downloading updates like what XP and 7 was like.

Couple of hours and I was back up and running. helped that I backed up my bookmarks and sync my passwords in Chrome and all my data is stored on another drive/NAS.

Does that mean all your Elite settings moved over as well as they were stored on another drive? Or did you have to backup/restore?

How effective is Windows Fresh Start? In the past I've always reformatted and done a fresh clean install. It sounds like Fresh Start may actually be almost the same thing. Only recently I changed my computer case and decided to try a go of it with no optical drive.
Like most of you I upgraded from Windows 7 therefore this OS installation has years of baggage. I want to start over sometime soon to see if I can squeeze just a little more performance out of my machine.

I have a Windows 7 VM to run games in now - I have tried 10 Home and Pro and while it is possible to stop a lot of the nastiness it is just too much hard work staying on top of it.
I have a laptop with Win 10 installed for the sole reason of playing ED. All the other games I play now run on Linux or Wine. I really want someone, FD or someone, to sort it out so that ED will run on Linux or a VM.

I always back up my frontier settings - just in case :p

For those who don't know, you can find them at

"C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous"

(not Elite_Dangerous - that's not the settings :) )

I have all the updates, Creator, etc... I haven't had any problems except for maybe a few video drivers that had issues but otherwise all has been good.

My system is close to a year old now, give or take a few months and build by me. Makes me wonder why you all have problems that would require reinstalling.

I run Win 10, a 1070, 32 gigs memory, triple screens and VR. I use it mainly for gaming with.

Fortunately I just received the DoD secure configuration specs for Win 10

You can get refurbed Win 10 boxes for as little as $110 with Core i3 CPU's and 4GB ram. I'll be using a few of these over the next few months for setup and testing to look forward to building a new gaming rig next year that won't phone home behind my back.

These refurb boxes with Core i5 CPU's for around $150 also make incredibly powerful PFSense edge boxes if you're into that sort of thing. Some of the i3's don't have AES-NI support needed for the next version of PFSense, but the i5 boxes do. Add a dual port intel nic and it makes a cool and quiet edge router that's hard to beat.

Between DoD secure Win 10 config and blocking ports on PFSense, I'm confident I can build a Win 10 gamer that will be secure.

Shouldn't be this complicated...
