Newcomer / Intro friend requests from gankers

This has happened to me a couple of times. Call me dense, but what's the motivation behind getting a friend request from a CMDR who has ganked you? Clearly it depends upon whether we're talking about an experienced, serious PVP player or a seal-clubber who... whatever, I won't cover that ground here; that's not what this post is about.

Clearly also, I don't know which character it is when I get such a friend request. What's your take on this? What's your experience? Is there anything beyond being able to track a target for more jollies?

It can be a tracker on you if you show location.

It can be a genuine friend attempt or because you were a 'good sport' they think your OK and want to talk

A lot say its to help players after they ganked you.....I know.

Some hope you enjoy PVP

I rarely accept unless they chat first or act 'decent' ie not chain interdicting when obviously losing that battle and Im obviously not in the mood.

I am not usually one to defend player-killers, but I think there is some clarification needed.

I don't think you were "ganked". It is a nasty word and descibes malicious intent, trolling and trying to discourage a player from playing.
If they parked in a station and kept killing you before you even can get out over and over, that would be ganking. If they just killed you when you met, I wouldn't call that ganking. It's just PvP. Of course one could argue that if a player with a hyper-PvP build goes after a much weaker ship (and here it doesn't really matter what it is - every ship is much weaker than a dedicated PvP build) it IS kind of a Richard move, but I would still give them a benefit of a doubt. They might be roleplaying something. (Perhaps a psycho serial killer  ) Who knows.

That being said, I usually accepted the friend requests from players who killed me. Couple of them turned out to be quite alright, couple of them, I've never spoken to.
What guys above me say about them being able to track you on the galaxy map is true, but it also needs to be said, that it works both ways - you can see where THEY are. And possibly give them a wide berth. It's up to you. You can always unfiend and blacklist them later. :)

All I'll say is that gankers, the REAL gankers, don't usually send friend requests.

I accept all friend requests. And if I get ganked and especially if they win, I am sure to make a friend request to my recent ganker. It's a game and we pvpers, gankers and non gankers, are too few. The more the merrier.

I use the friends list to see where social hotspots are. Not to target my friends. At any rate, we in organized PvP, have killed each other so often, that it's just not as interesting fighting in open space rather than dense rocks or planetary surfaces.

If I am feeling non-social, then Solo mode is a godsend.

I think you confuse ganking with griefing.
I don't want to sound like a Wikipedia, but griefing is just a subset of ganking. All griefing is ganking but not all ganking is griefing.
Ganking is generally any in-game PvP interaction where one side is disproportionately disadvantaged and unable to avoid conflict.
Griefing is a more severe harrassment that has usually a meta side to it (stream sniping, for example) or is confined to a specific area.

In any case, I could have used both terms to describe what I was talking about, but I hesitate to use the term griefing when comes to Elite, because technically, considering we have things like Solo mode, blacklisting and ship transfer, I don't think you even can be REALLY griefed in Elite.
You can certainly be ganked, though.

Maybe hoping to recruit you into their PVP gang?

Some just want to talk to you, tell you how you could improve so that it doesn’t happen again. They give you tips on ship builds and evasion.

They just want more details about you so they can share with their brain dead friends and make you look even more stupid and them even more clever than they think they are.

Such a variety of replies! This is very interesting.

My intention wasn't to open a debate about why or about good/bad - really. There are far too many of those to contribute to already.

I'll refrain from apologizing outright for my possible misuse of the term. The definition as presented has a slight problem in that it presumes knowledge of intent. I have no such knowledge as a player who gets ambushed by a complete stranger with no communication at all (before or after) in my unengineered, essentially-stock cargo ship that has no capability against most anything else with weaponry or maneuverability, especially powerplay, PvP gear.
One could easily argue about how disproportionate the advantage was and about the inability to avoid the conflict but that's just fuel for a fire I wasn't stoking here.
In this situation, one could almost guess what many people would surmise the motivation to be. The lack of any term that approximates "malicious" isn't one that I'd expect to encounter in those instances. Whether that's right or wrong is not the care here (in my case).

I'm not angry at the event. No defending "them" is necessary in my mind. (The reasons for that are unimportant here.) The ship is utterly cheap. That's why I use it when I use it. I prefer to play in OPEN, so I know the risks, I know it happens - that's not the issue at all. In fact you can find other posts of mine that illustrate that I believe there is a role for PvP, etc. Again, I'll refrain from commenting on what I believe this was; that wasn't the intent of my post.

Again, to the group of responses to my actual questions- very interesting. I appreciate it!

Fly dangerously carefully, CMDRs! :)
