Newcomer / Intro "Friendlies" engaging each other

So I have been doing some Bounty Hunting at RES in a couple of different systems and I tend to move on when the local pirate group start ganging up and shooting me on sight once I get scanned.

Today I am in an Alliance system in a RES and I moved in on a fire fight to see if I could mop up and help them out :)

I see the nearest target firing and I get a green symbol on my hud - its a System Authority ship. Ok so I switch to his target and that also comes up as a green friendly, once I scan him though, I get the red Wanted tag.

I decided to hold my fire and just watch the "action".

I am thinking that the Wanted guy must have come from the other system I am also friendly with (Federation). If I decide to fire on him I take it that I would then become wanted in his home system, I have one of my ships stored there, so I would probably want to go back at some stage.

Lastly, if I do fire on him, would I also become wanted in my current system?

Thanks

When a wanted ship is green you're friendly with his faction. I just kill them, its a bounty and the guy must have done something wrong :)

If he's wanted in the system you scan him, you don't get wanted when shooting at him. You can always shoot at wanted ships. (be carfeul with KWS though, that he has a bounty doesn't mean that he is wanted in this system)
You lose some rep with his faction though sometimes. But only a little bit. Sometimes you also gain some... idk. It's strange.

'Green' means only that you're friendly with his faction. This doesn't hold back criminals/pirates from this faction interdicting you and trying to kill you. ;)

this is where the game needs to develop and grow..... there are no real benefits or subtle advantages to being friendly to any faction ....other than certain ships become available......if a green ship is WANTED in that system then you can fire on it and claim the bounty..... equally you can be allied and be top ranked with any faction...... but if you get wanted and fined for any reason the local feds will be out to kill you... like a common criminal.... scanned at the local starport and youre space dust... :)

One exciting by product is that if you keep attacking wanted ships from the same faction, eventually that faction will become hostile to you. That means that will attack you on site.
I still remember going back to my favourite res after a couple of days hunting and suddenly there were about 8 ships all red all firing at me straight away. It was exciting! Just managed to get away with some hull left. Too me a while to understand why at first. The Jet Cartel now attack me on site. It changes the mechanics quite a bit in that sometimes things will ramp up before you are ready to take action. Luckily there are other factions that hate them too so I get help. You just have to be careful not to be overwhelmed by them and pick your battles and weed them out a little.

Ok - got it, thanks.

This is the stuff I really like about ED right now - it certainly makes things more interesting and keeps you on your toes.

Really impressed so far with the great community here at Frontier, its great that people take the time to answer these sort of noob questions without getting the RFTM or use the search function response!

Cheers

To add to the above: when you shoot a ship your reputation with that local faction (and Empire/Fed/Alliance if applicable) decreases. However, if it is wanted, you'll gain reputation with whomever issues the bounty. If these are the same (so a player from Faction X being wanted by Faction X) you gain more reputation than you lose. So you can safely BH all wanted ships without fearing reputation loss with a main faction. Just be mindfull that minor factions, usually pirates/anarchists, tend to become unhappy when you continue to kill them. :)
