Friendly fire and system security

RANT MODE ON!

I am so        g sick of the stupidity of some of the rules in ED!! [sour]

800 yards from the rear end of a Python and taking him out with Lasers. And some stupid cop [wacky] flies in front of me and right into a beam laser.

The place was crawlin' with system security and within seconds I'm their target. Wham, BAM! And my family gets a telegram from the goobermint regretting to inform them their son is dead because a COP was stupid.

Rant mode off.

I seem to remember about a year or so ago the rules were adjusted so that if you hit a non enemy just once it was forgiven. Not so anymore it seems. And the danged cops seem to fly between me and the ship I'm going after on purpose.

I'm starting to get why so many are bailing out. I'm not ready to do that - YET.

Probably time to take a break from ED for a while, though. Maybe come back after 2.2 is released.

Have fun y'all!

Unfortunate. Imagine if police see a bad guy and just break out automatic rifles and mow down every other constable nearby because they are in the way.

<removed comment regarding friendly fire as not appropriate>.

Did you not post about the same thing a few weeks ago? and the subject went down hill going on about how in the USA its fine to carry guns and kill criminals at random.

The rule in elite is : dont hit the cop.
And they only fine you if you do a lot of damage , just manage how much fire you lay down and everything will be fine (or get an upgrade for your weapons that disable damage on friendly ships)

I think the change was to base their response relative to the amount of damage inflicted. Small MC pings are not the same as a beam laser.

Friendly fire is an actual thing that actually kills actual people. Claiming it shouldn't matter that you are giving some cop a paddlin' because they happen to stray in front of you, rather than not shooting, is more on you - than them.
Oh shut it.
Doesn't happen to me often, but it is annoying. Your real life comparison is ... this is a game.

Such a terrible and inapplicable analogy. Shooting a shielded cop in a shielded ship in Elite is more like bumping into a cop on a busy street than shooting anyone.

Your argument only really applies when a single shop can be fatal. With shields and armour this is very seldom the case in ED.

If the OP had managed to do some hull or internal damage to the cop, fair enough that he becomes target number one. But a couple of stray shots into a cop's shield should be just a fine and a warning - certainly for a first offense.

They do it less often, but when they do, it is unbelievably idiotic. They just sort of meandre into a hail of bullets and then cry foul when their ship takes a bit of damage. They don't even have to die for the charge to take effect. I tend to just mow down Authority ships after that happens, screw 'em!

Actually AI will often complain if it's a stray shot. Cops too.

However a beam laser isn't a stray shot. In the space of a few seconds it will strip quite a lot of shield and is capable of triggering a bounty in short order.

Op doesn't indicate which type of laser.

Also I apologise for my example. It was inappropriate. And I accept it was in poor taste. Please excuse. I will amend my post. :(

It is annoying, but rare as has been said. Your weapons have to be kicking a big punch to get them to turn on friendly fire. It's not like a stray bullet. Imagine if they didn't turn and friendly fire was wiping out cops with no recourse - how the forum would complain how unreal the AI cops are. It seems fairly balanced to me.

Two words, OP: fire discipline.

If you were destroyed, you did a lot more than just graze the cop with a stray shot; you blasted the heck out of him.

The game is better for having consequences for entering combat with the "spray & pray" approach.

"working as intended"

Honestly people can talk about discipline all you want. Fact of the matter is that if you were in a wing with a mate and he kept flying in front of you like an a-hole, you'd unfriend him.

This is beyond the occasional idiot cop, this is the majority of them. Honestly, who is at fault for seeing big death beams and flying directly into them like an idiot? The AI. Players should not be punished for the game's shortcomings.

I don't agree that your example was inappropriate or bad taste, as it very accurately explains the current situation. However, I don't think it should apply to ED. But that is the point of the thread.

This has been an issue since release. They just need to make it a fine rather than a warrant and job done. It should only be a warrant if you kill them...

Oh boy, this thread again! It's always:

"Hold your fire, it's your fault. FD shouldn't change anything, you should change."
VS
"FD is wrong about this, stuff happens. FD should change it so it's more fun and less aggravating."

No, it's just still an issue for those who do not know how to let off the trigger. If you are paying attention, this does not occur anymore. (Aside from turrets, but I don't use them) Beam lasers are particularly easy to cause cop aggro if you don't let off the trigger.

The response should depend on your reputation, both with the factions involved and overall crime history.

My CMDR should really be expecting cops to shoot him just for looking at them funny, since he has killed hundreds of cops (mostly pre 2.1).

Yeah, nah.
There are occasions when the Security derp out of nowhere right through a beam at light speed and then get all indignant about it. Admittedly its a lot less prolific as it was, but it does happen.
