Friendly fire. Totally stupid.

What a useless reply, go away.

Another useless reply.

I should have seen this reply coming when I read the OP.

Basically you are saying "Agree with me or shut up."

I agree with the rest that the problem is the Chair-Keyboard interface.
If you want to sit there and just hold the trigger down, that fine. Be prepared for the consequences though.

Not really. It still is going to happen. It's not moot. You still need to have a game that suits people who aren't as skilled as those that are. Plus, I think even with all the skill in the world an accident can happen. No-one is perfect. You might sneeze lol.

It may be moot for you...But not to me or many others. If It's moot for you, why do you want to down conversation about it? I just think the punishment should be a fine (and perhaps temp lock out of res) instead of a bounty. I'm really surprised it's proved such a controversial suggestion!

It will be a fine. And apparently someone posted a suggestion somewhere about a third mode, the "make it legal but no cops plz" idea, and Sandro himself said the idea has merit. It isn't going to happen in Chapter one, it's way too late, but he's intrigued by the idea.

Folks this thread really has run It's course for me. I agree that trigger control is important and it appears the punishment for when accidents do happen is being amended to a fine in beyond. I'm satisfied with that. In future, I'm just going to give the 'just be better' crowd a wide berth ;)

As the OP, you can ask the mods to close it.

hello.yeah i think its stupid to .why?? .let me explain.i took a mission to kill a terrorist leader.i go to the system i find him ,he was attaking a federal navy ship so like the noob that i am i didnt wait to scan i atacked him directly, because i wanted to help that navy ship.they all started shooting me,even the ship i was trying to help.now thats as stupid as it can get.i got away with a 200 cr bounty.....so i went in a low security system to pay out my bounty.interstelar factor does not have the 200 cr bounty but instead i have to pay 11888900 bounty in federation .so i do.i go back out i kill my target ,and then i go to a nav beacon ,and again i shoot someone without completing the scan ,and i get 200 bounty.when i go to pay thet off i have 11888900 all over again.so yeah with the new changes seems like the devs think we have some god powers to add credits to our accounts.i mean it would be fine if smeaton would still be available but not like this .so those 11888900 need some explanation because paying that 2 times in 10 minutes its not gonna do this game any good.....short or longterm
peace
Or like a responsible you can wait to finish the scan rather than blame the game for your wrong doings...

Why is it so easy to get a bounty from a stray shot? So infuriating! This game could be amazing but there's so much stupid lazy stuff like that ruining it. If the OTHER GAME is ever actually released without some of the stupid stuff in Elite, I'm a goner.

Last I checked it heavily depends on what kind of 'stray' shot you make.

If you are using heavy weapons then yes, you will quickly reach the threshold that triggers the bounty, but if not, then it should be avoidable.

The general idea is that you need enough situational awareness to avoid doing this. And this isn't meant as 'git gud' but simply as a fact in the in game world.
Kinda like reckless drivers irl or similar, or imagine if the police was in a fire fight irl, and someone trying to help them accidentally hit them, they are going to react first and figure out later, because stray shots are dangerous.
We as players just don't see them that way because "It is a game" but within the game universe it is a dangerous action.

As for "the other game" it is already displaying that it will meet many if not most of the problems elite has, because solving these things that players find inconvenient just isn't easy.

It's moot for me and many others who have improved their skill in the game and I think that might be part of our disagreement. This line right here: 'You still need to have a game that suits people who aren't as skilled as those that are' sticks out to me pretty hard. I'm still pondering why, but my gut tells me is that I certainly hope you want a game that challenges you to grow, think, and become not just a better player but perhaps a better human as well.

What I mean is like what that one Green Bay Packers coach use to say: games don't build character, they reveal it. And heck, if Elite ain't real good at revealing character (and giving you a chance to adapt to your own).

Point is, challenge is good. There's lots of experienced folks here saying the current (and future) penalties for friendly fire are gonna be just dandy. Consider that, eh?

And hey... there's always smart rounds if you don't want to git gud (good natured joke, I swear!). :p

We're the "git gud" crowd. Get it right, OP ;)

Of course! I'm not asking for there to be no punishment for it. Just for it to be more proportionate to the crime. The reality is a 200cr bounty or a 100,000cr bounty makes no difference to defence forces or players. They still try to kill you. I don't think it's fair that an honest mistake gets punished as heavily as being a pirate. But I think loose fire should be fined and the player blocked from res sites for a time.

I feel like I'm making myself out to be hopeless. I'm not really. I can hold my own in a dogfight and quite competent flicking flight assist off etc for tighter turning. ;)

Anyway, really gotta go and play the game now!!!
I gave you the info you need in the first reply. Have you done nothing but complain since? Just look at the beta.

The threat of death has a way of motivating people. [haha]

But seriously, consider friendly fire an opportunity to practice your escape game! Not even joking a little bit. Before long you'll be outfoxing gankers in CGs like it's nothing.

FYI.

Security (and most NPC's) react to the one doing the damage.

So if you shoot a security ship (even by accident) that's not currently taking fire, it'll come after you.

But, if that security ship is a taking heavy fire from something else, you may still get a bounty, but that security ship will go back to what's shooting it first.

You can test this by play yo-yo with another CMDR.

Shoot an NPC, it'll come to you.
Let the other CMDR shoot them more. They'll turn around.
Then you shoot them again. They'll come back. lol

I use this tactic to confuse NPC's with my SLF sometimes.

Haven't read through the rest of this thread but just watch this video (from timestamp) from Cmdr Codger, it's not easy to get a friendly fire bounty at all.

It probably already has been mentioned but without friendly fire you would not be allowed to defend yourself. If the attacker doesn't get wanted you can't shoot him without getting wanted yourself. That's such a simple fact that it always amazes me when people don't think about it and dare to use terms like stupid.
