Friends in Multicrew

I haven't really given multi crew much time but I wanted to know if it is possible to joins a friends ship, rather than just some random person. I couldn't find the option to do so. If not, why not? I thought this was the main objective of the multicrew update?

Under invite to wing is invite to crew.

make sure your not in a wing you can't mix the two and you need to be in or joining a friend in a multicrew ship. not all are compatible
