Friends in other formats

Can I hook up with friends on pc in game if I'm on xbox one ?

There are threads discussing this but I am given to understand that no, you can not yet. Though we all fly in the same universe and believe experience the same things across platforms, an Xbox player, PS4 player and a PC player in the same exact location will not see each other or interact with each other. Microsoft is supposedly working to cross this barrier but it seems that Stoney not so much.
