From DK2 to CV1

Finally got my CV1

i got over 200-300hrd hours in my DK2 with elite and played till yesterday in it.

So whats better in CV1 than DK2

Pros:

-Way less Screendoor effect. I would say 1/5 of the DK2. The screendoor is now barly noticable, its really ok now.

-New lenses make the picture much more sharp. With the better screendoor and the sharper picture its relly looking good now. Before it was blurry and that screendoor effect really suckd. But now Awesome. i would say 40% better picture
I took dk2 then went into cv2 and again and again its really now a nice clear picture.

-Comfort Awesome, its lighter than my headset(yeah i got a big one).

-Easy to setup

- nice IPD adjustment

Cons

-Price

-New frensel lenses got a little bit of glare(reflection) on balck on white

-Heating , its ok and better than DK2 but still they could have put in a little little fan on top that pushes the heat out

So yeah thats it , i really didnt think it is that much better than DK2 but the better image and the way better screen door now really puts a smile in your face.

Would i recommend buying one now, hmm . If you play elite and DCS alot than yeah. if not wait, cause there are really not much games for it. Chronos is really a nice one too.
For me its ok cause i play alot elite and for that its noooo going back hehe. So if the money is not hurting BUY one NOW ;)

My PC :

- intel skylake i7 6700k

- Geforece GTX980ti AMP extreme editon

and elite runs on maxed out 2x supersampling... yeah just everything on high, without stutter lag or anything else just wonderfull.

PS in CV1 you have to put AMBIENT OCCLUSION off ,cause the new lenses glare a littel and with it on you get totaly anoying reflections. But when its of its awesome, oh and i got no black smeer anymore.

oh and a friend of mine got the Vive.

PRO CV1

better comfort and little better picture

PRO VIVE

- roomtracking

i would take the rift before the vive cause for long sessions its better. But both are good headsets and no matter wich you choose its ok

Are you not seeing the gradient issues and grey splotches ??

And what about the rays/smearing when you approach a station ?

While I agree with much of your review concerning the comfort and ergonomics my personal experience with the CV1 and Elite is that the visuals are nowhere near as good as they were on the DK2 under 0.8

hmm i got no rays or smear ! i also had no problem on DK2 from 0.8 to 1.3 , the only thing what was on the dk2 was the black smear , but thats totaly gone now on CV1. Do you have amd or nvidia perhaps update your drivers . lol the visuals are atleast 30-40% better . i thing it is something on you end sry did you try to update firmware of cv1 or perhaps reinstall oculus home

Im going to investigate today, good to know that it is most likely a problem with my setup.

Will report back.

Edit : Changed my settings to VR Low and rebuilt the shader cache and bingo. All the artifacts have gone.

I now fully concur 100% with your review :]

I received my CV-1 on April 29th.
I disconnected my DK2 and connected the CV-1, all went without a hitch, except the Xbox controller, which didn't want to power on, on batteries alone.
I had to connect it directly with a usb cable to get it to power on, thereafter everything was ok.

However...
The first thing I did after connecting the CV-1 was start Elite.
I was expecting a much better experience as my DK-2, less pronounced screendoor effect and as the CV-1 has 25% more pixels than the DK2 a clearer picture.
But nothing, to me it looks exactly the same as the DK2.
I ran my DK2 without any external improvements like SweetFX or changing the HUD color, the same for the CV-1 now.

I was wondering how is Elite: Dangerous supposed to know that I'm using the CV-1 now in stead of the DK2.
Does it automatically change the resolution?

Oculus home sets everything automaticly, the resolution ingame only changes the game on you monitor

oh and for the dk2 you have to put on 2x supersampling its a ton of difference. makes the blurryness a lot better . I also have it on 2 with cv1 i can try it on off for the guys with no so good grafikcards

To the CV1 users,
Does the sky look as black as it did before with the DK2 on oculus pre-1.3?

There is a huge dynamic range with the default gamma. It ranges from full black outside the galactic plane to grey billows of nebulosity.

Knocking down the gamma gives you that dark moody atmospheric vibe at the expense of less smooth gradients.

It looks good, takes a bit of getting used to if you have spent hours on the DK2 on earlier runtimes but you quickly adapt to it.

We have to "adapt" to it? Does that mean it is not as pretty and atmospheric as it was with DK2/pre1.3?

Its arguably prettier and more atmospheric but its not that pitch black "lost in space" vibe that you got in the DK2 under 0.8

The CV1 itself is a vastly superior immersive experience in Elite. The more i play the more impressed i am.

thank you ! I'm still contemplating buying CV1 or waiting for CV2...

HI,
So I've read a few posts back that someone was able to force a rebuild of the shader cache that potentially fixed some gradient/color banding issues... Can someone tell me how to do that? I've got a CV1/980 GTX with latest drivers, and the color gradient issues is killing me.... As a note, I'm using the standalone Elite Launcher, not Steam or Oculus Home (if that matters)...

Thanks,

Thanks,

Change your settings to VR Low and ensure the rebuild shader cache on startup is enabled, set the gamma to default (in the middle), quit the game and restart.

I was getting really bad splotches and gradient banding and this sorted it for me.

I am also using the standalone launcher.

Hope this helps.
