From Visual to Map ? Another newbie question

Hello,

I have another newbie Explorer question.

Let's suppose that I am seeing something interesting from the cockpit. Is there some method how to find on Galaxy map what I am seeing and plot a route to it ? I will try to explain my question on two pictures.

1. There is something interesting - the white star cluster at the left part of the view

And the second picture, some time later - same object just above the "D-SCANNER" title

Clearly, my overall direction is approx. right, I am getting closer to this cluster/nebula/anything.

How can I find on the Galaxy map, what exactly is this and plot the route to it ? I tried to find it, fiddling with map, trying to look in 3D map around plotted course, but no success.
What is the recommended method to find map locations for some objects visible from the cockpit ?
And from the above pictures, anybody can say what is this object and where I can find it on map and plot course to it ? My current location is
OUTORST NN-S C17-1 approx. 2540 Lys from Sol.

Thx for any assistance.

For that particular star cluster, you will be filtering by star type on the galaxy map and then prioritizing O/B type stars. They are all mostly bright spots as well, hard to miss.

Ok, I'm currently approx 2500Ly on the other side of the bubble, but I stopped for a break a nd spotted your post. I have a method that works consistently for me but I don't know quite how to put it into words.

That said, I will give it my best shot.

1. Find your location on the Galaxy Map (Duh!). In this case OUTORST NN-S C17-1
2. Find your target destination and use it to get an idea of the direction you are facing. For you that appears to be OUTORST WJ-I D9-20

Now this is where I may struggle to explain it. So please bare with me.

3. Compare your view, with the direction your destination is in and compare it to the view on your Galaxy Map. In this case your destination is above your line of travel, however, if you will see on the galaxy map that your destination is below your current position. (See image). This means that relative to the Galaxy Map, you are flying upside down. If it helps you to visualise, turn your ship the "correct" way up for the next step.

4. Try to ascertain the rough direction in which your objective is in by comparing it to the direction your current target is in. Going by the screenshot you have provided, it is down and right in comparison. (Or up and left once you have flipped it over to match the Galaxy Map)

5. We can tell from this distance that your objective is either a nebula, or somewhere very near one. So on the Galaxy Map, you will want to travel in the direction we expect it to be in, until you find something that looks similar. It may be further than you think. Or even at more of an angle to what you expect so don't worry if it takes you several attempts.

6. Once you have located a likely suspect, target it. Go back to cockpit view and if it matches up, excellent! If not, check if the new target is closer to or further away from the intended target and repeat steps 3-5 accordingly

Now, to me, there is a possibility that what you are seeking is the Iris Nebula. However, not being in the location you are, limits my capabilities of being able to tell for certain.

Search for FW CEPHEI on the map, and if it lines up then happy travels. If not, I will certainly endeavour to help further.

Edit: On a side note, always fly away from any stars or other large light sources before starting these steps. You'd be surprised what additional info you can gather just by reducing the light pollution.

First off, that's NGC 7822 (this is almost always the answer when someone posts a 'what's that obvious thing in the skybox?' question on here... :D)

More generally, if you're in a reasonably dense area then point at the shiny thing and then select all the systems in the left hand panel one after another until you find the one that's closest to the right direction and that should give you a bearing on the galaxy map to scroll in and look for the thing.

When you think you've found it you can select it in the galmap and it will show in the skybox, even if it's far too far to jump to
it's less obvious from here

, so you can check that the reticule is bracketing your shiny thing.

Do go visit the nebula though, it's brilliant. Full of black holes and wonderful views.

You'll feel a measure of hate for Star Falcon when you leave but that's OK, it is one of the most impressive places in the game.

.
Maybe not "hate" but certainly "envy" :D
.
I agree with the "check your contacts page" to get the general bearing... it works VERY well... all the way there, too! (that is, should you not be able to find it immediately in GalMap).

Thank you very much for ideas and hints. Maybe one more question. Who/What is it the "Star Falcon" you mentioned ?

No problem. Take lots of pictures!!!

Star Falcon is a player who (I'm guessing) has gotten "First Discoverer" for most, if not all, of the systems inside the NGC 7822 Nebula
