Game Director
I'm posting on David's behalf:

Hi All,

As I mentioned on my video diary a few weeks ago, Frontier has some great plans for the future and today we are announcing our IPO. We were already well set up for Elite: Dangerous via a combination of cash and the excellent funding we received from all of you, but this will help us do a great deal more, especially in terms of the technology behind the game. Further details of the IPO can be found here on our website:

Thanks,

David

I'm not a finance/markets minded person so have no idea of the terminology, but is this separate from the video diary announcement of the additional investors? Or is it, in effect, the same thing? :S Just curious.

Congratulations Frontier.

Interesting read. As far as my understanding of these things go (it's very limited), this bodes well for the future of both Frontier and Elite: Dangerous.

I've never bought shares before so wouldn't know where to start but as I backed ED I have a vested in seeing Frontier continue to thrive. If buying some shares helps in this I'm keen to jump in for a small amount. Could someone point me in the right direction?

So another 40 million or thereabout raised, interested now into what percentage of that will go into Elite:Dangerous even if its split into the 4 major goals listed at the end of the post, with the majority going to the development of Cobra, Elite Dangerous was still the 2nd listed commodity there, that's a huge potential for a massive investment for this game. I think that shows the confidence that DB and Frontier have in this game. I wish FDEV all the best for the future too. It feels good to look at a forward thinking company in our current financial environment. I would be interested in purchasing shares in FDEV not as a financial investment per say but simply personal reasons to own a bit of the company that has made some of my favourite games. I hope now the company has gone public you will be able to divulge some information such as how much has been spent on the game without having to read through all the AGM stuff. I'm sure however that this company has a fantastic future now and that eventually it will become one of the best software companies in the world. Just don't forget us though the fans, like certain companies have done and alienated its fanbase against them. We all have a fondness for Elite the game and Frontier the company we wouldn't have hit the kickstarter if we didn't so please just be nice to us and we will continue that love forever :)

I don't pretend to understand this announcement, but does it mean that in theory Frontier Development could be bought out by say EA, Microsoft or Apple?

So another 40 million or thereabout raised....
It's a market capitalisation of 39.4 million. That means that Frontier is being valued at 39.4 million when it goes public. After that it is of course the current value of the shares that indicates that market value of the company.

As for the IPO, from what I could read out of David Braben's comments, the IPO seems to be oversubscribed. Now, I'm not sure if his comment is related to the fund raising Frontier did in June according to the article, or to the upcoming IPO.

Wow, 40 million value. According to duedil.com David owns 70% of the company, he will be loaded!
I see the Braben on a tourist rocket to space (for real) anytime soon. :)

Good news...I think. As someone else said, I might be interested in a few shares too for sentimental and supporting purposes.

This is very exciting news

This is very exciting news.. Noticed on iii this morning that there is a placeholder for this share already:

Absolute confidence in the offering to the market and the foundation from which this has come. Hoping for big increases in the valuation of this company as we approach March next year, and skyrocketing after release.

For those investing in Kickstarter, good opportunity here to invest, and see a return on your shares (which will recover the kickstarter investment and support this game further).

I'm 'in' first thing Monday morning.

Looks like a good thing, if possible I hope to buy some shares on Monday. However, I worry that the company and maybe even Elite, will now by controlled by the share holders instead of a publisher.

At the end of the day, if there are big shareholder backers, they could still vote out people they have no confidence in. Obviously this won't happen now and I hope it never happens (be aware people, it's how Steve Jobs was fired from his own companies all those years ago).

But still, lets hope it helps give more funding to Frontier Elite. If I owned some shares, tiny amount it will be, I'll always have confidence in David as it's clear he's a gamer and has a love and passion for the game.

Is it easy to ISA investments at that site, Commander Haggis?

A platform you'd recommend?

I'm not on commission but...

Is it easy to ISA investments at that site, Commander Haggis?

Yes very (I use it a lot myself - and I'm not on commission to say that!) You set up an account to manage money between your bank and iii, then within that account you setup an ISA account, or a trading account or both to transfer funds between your iii account and your ISA or shares.
You can setup to transfer funds on a regular basis each month, or on an ad-hoc basis and can cancel or stop or withdraw at any point.

I would also say do your own research, as there many other fund supermarkets and share dealing sites each with different charges (Hargreaves landsdown, Fidelity, iii, Halifax etc etc etc...)

Let me know if you need any more info.

Great news for FD & ED both, with the public interest generated it would be great if we could buy shares through the backers app - a reward that rewards (should the share price go up).

Thanks Commander Haggis, I've been looking at a few online platforms and trying to make a decision. I will check that one out thoroughly right now :)
