Frontier dropped the ball, so what do I do this weekend?

I was so very excited when the changelog for 2.4 dropped with a new Rescuer role and hull repair limpets added. I'd been wanting this for more than a year. The thought of being able to go out, refuel and repair distressed ships, being sent to recover escape pods and bring people back to safety.

Except it didn't happen like this, did it :( Frontier put everything in place needed for this, except anything on the missions board.

So, I'm left wondering what to do in the game on another weekend. I've got no money to raise, I've done too much combat recently, I've got no materials or data to gather, and no engineers to unlock. I've got nowhere to go, nothing to explore, and I've been to just about every Thargoid site ages ago.

Is there anything interesting going on in the galaxy you can suggest I get involved with?

Thanks all.

Do you fly flight assist off?

If not, it completely transforms the game. COMPLETELY.

There's a reason the Sidewinder is my fav ship in game! With PE thrusters, it's a blast to fly FA Off!:)

Yeah, I consider it a shallow attempt, I've been scooping up and delivering escape pods for almost as long as I've played Elite, the only difference I see now, is they're handed into a specific part of the board, please Fdev, lets have some rescue mission, escape pod beacons that require a module to detect them and so on and so forth, limited time to find the pods before their air supply runs out.

Speaking of your sig, I always write the second line as 'the courage to change the things I cannot accept', gives it a little better balance. By the way, I love you username. Is your name really Andy and your Dad's name really Bob?

So you wanted to SEARCH and RESCUE but couldn't be bothered to SEARCH?

Totally dropped ball by Frontier there yeah. What a joke

You could go to search and rescue but have a mission associated to it. "My husband went buying cigarettes but didn't come back" this kind of thing.

Investigate (and solve) any of the dozens of listening posts in the galaxy:

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Listening_post#Locations

I have NEVER heard of these before. is it just 'locate a specific planet and land, end mission' kind of deal, or is there more to it than that? Just wondering if it's worth investigating.

Also, Kudos Frontier, on making these even slightly signposted *sarcasm* I've been in the game 3 damn years and I've never seen anything refer to these once, were they in a single galnet article 2 years ago that disappeared by now or something? Seriously, Galnet needs a search function if that's how you're going to point out to players that these things exist /rantover

Yea, it would be good if more of these locations were shared once they've been discovered by someone in-game. But, it is what it is right now.

For the OP they offer a fun, slightly profitable, and ultimately inconsequential diversion for a few hours. Personally, I keep a log of which ones I've yet to visit so if I ever find myself in the OP's situation, I can always pursue one of these.

Oh, and to answer your first couple of questions: no, they're not normal missions. They're clues to a destination (maybe a ship, a planetary base, a mysterious object) where there is a short story, an unsolved mystery, a unique structure, etc... there's usually salvage at the destination too. Read the wiki page for info on how to solve the clues - it helps to have a pen and paper handy, and a basic knowledge of ciphers (look it up!).

Good luck!

See, that would be fun, but yet again it requires a pen and paper or outside program that would pull me out of VR. So goddamn sick of that. If the game is going to require note taking, include a simple note taking page within the game and typing that will work with VR!

Oh, look at that, I ranted again...

Thanks all.

You should hop over the Exploration forum, a very friendly place. There you could join up with the Rat Repairs and head out into the black to rescue unfortunate Explorers.

Rescue missions would be nice. Meanwhile I'm on the above-linked Repair And Tour. I've repaired three players so far and will be meeting my fourth later today. By the time I do I will have covered close to 120,000 lightyears on the trip. I expect that number will be over 150,000 Ly when I return home, assuming no one else needs repairs on the way.

Speaking of, is there any point to bringing black boxes, escape pods, etc. back to the station? The credit payout is very small, so I wonder if there is some other hidden benefit - like BGS effects, faction rating improvement, or something I haven't even considered.

Yeah i have to wonder if there is more coming for that too for the same reason. Or maybe I just hope so lol.

Have you considered getting into pvp?

Blimey! Thanks. I will update my sig! :)

Yeah regarding username too.

Just keep an eye on your left-hand panel during supercruise, and you'll see listening posts and other odd POIs from time to time. Note that these things only appear in your panel when you're less than 1000ls away, so you'll have to fly around a system a bit if you want to verify that there is *not* anything around.

I also recommend reading the *local* papers at various stations. Some of these contain stories which hint at mysterious things in certain systems or planets, and they will provide a starting point for your searches. I'm not 100% positive but I think these stories might be exclusive to papers with the word "herald" in the title.

edit: I got into the listening post clue hunts entirely from in-game, because I really detest the "gaming via YouTube style of play that Elite seems to be built around". But yeah anyway the listening post stuff is somewhat signposted within the game. I will warn you that some of these clue-hunts are dead ends, or finish off by pointing you to a planet where there's something interesting, but it gives you no coordinates. Also you'll in some cases have to grab a pencil and paper to decrypt codes, etc; and I'm sorry to say that some of the encoded messages and some of the decryption keys contain typos, which can make it waaaay harder to figure out.
