Frontier dropped the ball, so what do I do this weekend?

It would be really nice if they could flesh that profession out. I had been on picking at them to add a proper turn in for them instead of just selling it so glad they did.

Just keep an eye on your left-hand panel during supercruise, and you'll see listening posts and other odd POIs from time to time. Note that these things only appear in your panel when you're less than 1000ls away, so you'll have to fly around a system a bit if you want to verify that there is *not* anything around.

I also recommend reading the *local* papers at various stations. Some of these contain stories which hint at mysterious things in certain systems or planets, and they will provide a starting point for your searches. I'm not 100% positive but I think these stories might be exclusive to papers with the word "herald" in the title.

edit: I got into the listening post clue hunts entirely from in-game, because I really detest the "gaming via YouTube style of play that Elite seems to be built around". But yeah anyway the listening post stuff is somewhat signposted within the game. I will warn you that some of these clue-hunts are dead ends, or finish off by pointing you to a planet where there's something interesting, but it gives you no coordinates. Also you'll in some cases have to grab a pencil and paper to decrypt codes, etc; and I'm sorry to say that some of the encoded messages and some of the decryption keys contain typos, which can make it waaaay harder to figure out.

That is ridiculous. Even if you devote time to this unecessarily obtuse and opaque endeavour, theres the possibility of typo's and/or nothing? This would be fair enough in a sense, as it adds a sense of realism. But there's a certain point where you no longer need to go to extreme lengths for extra realism, and you just need gameplay.

Besides which, a coherent universe that follows it's own rules (no telepresence, etc) is better than a fully 'realistic' universe hands down. There's a difference between immersion and going out of your way to add details that most will not notice at the expense (because of limited dev time) of actual gameplay for a game that is sorely lacking it.

OP, friendship makes any online game enjoyable. Grab some friends, or make some in game, and wing up and go do CZs or something, talk about funny stuff and shenanigans.

They were so close. All it needed was a chain mission mechanic and some text. "THANK YOU CMDR FOR SAVING MY LIFE!! I HEARD THERE WAS AN ABANDONED MINE AT [THIS] PLANET WITH DOZENS OF EXQUISITE FOCUS CRYSTALS AND I'LL ALSO PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR YOU WITH [NAME] THE LEADER OF THE FACTION AT [SYSTEM]. I'M SURE SHE'LL HAVE A SPECIAL MISSION FOR SOMEONE LIKE YOU - SHE OWES ME"

Instead all I got was this lousy t-shirt and an insulting sum of credits
