Once upon a time we had frontier , and this evolved into first encounters, this made me think where is all the stuff we had in game in first encounters which we do not have in elite dangerous.
Firstly the start point was Merlin in Ross 154 with a saker mk3. two things here, firstly you cannot land on merlin in elite dangerous and the saker ship company does not exist.
Ships
Whilst this is a big debate on whether more ships are required , the question over the saker ship company still exists, OR if the saker ship company remerges and had purchased the Blue prints of the Panther clipper, Puma clipper, moray star boat, Tiger Trader ships and the other ships from FFE.
what happened to the Imperial trader ship? is there an ancient graveyard i can find second hand ( legacy) ships? like ( Tionisla Orbital Graveyard)?
This opens the next question , Military hyperdrives. was the campaign to ban Military drives prevalent in first encounters successful with their campaign to ban these military drives, because of the radioactives that were generated when it jumped? ( we obviously have guardian drives, but they use the same fuel, where military drives used military fuel and as a side effect everytime you jumped it generated radioactives they were a smaller mass freeing up space to uplift military fuel as cargo , ( which were illegal in alot of systems). there were two tiers of ECM too, one of which was a Naval ECM system
Mining
So this i think would be the best improvement we could make to Elite Dangerous, the MB4 planetary mining machine. we used to be able to put this on a planet and then harvest the minerals from the planets sub surface, with the volume of planets it would be really good to be able to do this, using different planet surfaces to generate different minerals , ( it could be a deployable aboard the rover when equipped , or we could drop it like we used to in FFE)
Missions
there was a mission chain that continued throughout the whole life of the game which "ended" in the middle of nowhere and a letter box opens on a trsnsporter and as you enter ( regardless of ship entering , there is some animation and you fly out with a thargoid interceptor ship. which appeared as a player ship so everyone knew you had completed the mission. the number of players that completed the entire chain tho was quite a small number so the number of thargoid player ships were quite minimal. maybe something like this could work, especially giben that as soon as the argents quest was completed, owning this ship made you an instant fugitive,
Lore
At the risk of being a closet Elite super fan, (I have been playing for over 30 years) in all of the games so far, we were issued a handbook on what to look out for. with the original Elite was a book that focussed on the mythical destination of Raxxla and the Dark wheel faction that lived there. Raxxla was a fabled entrance to a different galaxy...
What if?
a long time ago in a galaxy far far away and the alliance as just a few chaps who didnt like the empire or th federation and decided to go their own way, what if out in the black there is another (undiscovered) faction this has started to a certain extent with the marlinists, but everything is in the bubble ( unless you make the pilgrimage to colonia) what if colonia wasnt the only remote star port ( what if there is another out in the black in the undiscovered space) i think the scope to create new races/Factions out in the black undiscovered by previous players ...
What of when you discover ( and map) an entire system you get the option of renaming the system from black sector zh-1 col 19-102 to something a bit more manageable? (* subject to elite planetary naming conventions and not a duplicate of existing systems)
For the kids , when Elite first came out in 1984 all of the planets you could explore were on a single mapped page, in order to navigate from that mapped page you needed a galactic hyperdrive, as technology evolved and we discovered more about our galaxy we realised that these pages were different sectors of the same galaxy and this is what we have now, there has always been the myth of wormholes sending you to galaxies far far away tho, and with fleet carriers carrying the supplies you need that would also be pretty cool.... The factions tie in with odessey , but we would need these factions to be outside of the bubble in different areas giving wevery player the chance of discovering ancient or unknown factions out in the black with starports like colonia...
