Frontier game launcher & Steam game launcher q

So I'm trying to get a VR setup (Pimax + Nolo), obviously to play Elite. As I understand it, I need to switch my account to Steam to enable VR. I have two concerns:

1. Is it a permanent switch, so if I move it to Steam am I unable in the future for whatever reason to launch it outside of Steam?

2. I have a lifetime pass, as I bought this game right at the beginning under that offer. Does that transfer over to Steam?

If my memory serves me ... I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong ...

1. Yes. I didn't switch to Steam for this very reason.

2. Yes. The LEP is connected to Frontier Account, not Steam. If you were asking about consoles, then that would be a different matter.

OK so as I understand it so far, the switch to Steam would be permanent (not a biggie)
and I still retain my lifetime pass.

Seems that I'l be good to go in that case. Shame about the Steam-only switch, but it'll be a small price for VR I reckon.

Not sure in your case, but with Oculus Rift I don't need to use Steam. I just need the Oculus App on.
Once you set HDM+headphones in the 3D settings the game switches to VR automatically.

If you switch to Steam you can go back to the Frontier Launcher anytime.
I switched to Steam long time ago because there was some error with the Frontier Launcher. Then I had problems with Steam and when I tried again to go through Frontier launcher it was working just fine so no issue from this point of view.

You can start the game without steam even when you transferred your license to steam. Steam will get some money for every paintjob you buy though. You will also keep your LEP.

I doubt that you need steam for VR though, since VR worked before Elite was available on Steam. Not sure if there is a difference between Vive and Oculus Rift.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds good on the Steam/Frontier thing then. I understand that OR is native in Elite, but as I'm using Pimax + Nolo (if I can ever get the thing working) I'm assuming I'll need to go SteamVR.

Yeah as I said in my previous, I believe OR is available right in the game natively. My hopefully-soon-working Pimax + Nolo will be SteamVR compatible so that's why I'm looking at switching.

I am getting my Pimax running at the moment. You just need SteamVR and the PiTools. I created a Steam account, but you don't need to transfer Elite to Steam. PiTools just needs to know where the executable is, I think.
I use the Elite Profiler to decide if I want to be in 3d or not, then start it normally from the Launcher.

Thanks for the info, it all sounds very hopeful. Let me know the details of how you get ED in VR without Steam if you manage it would you? I don't know what Elite profiler is but if it saves me reinstallation then I'd be interested.
